Case knives you would NEVER buy....

Scrolling through the Shepherd Hills christmas catalog today and I made mental notes that there were just some Case knives that I would NEVER buy:

'bubba gum' bone (I swear this must be a great seller for them since they make an SFO for a ton of their knives using this material)

Pink G10
Cotton Candy
Cash
John Wayne

New for the Christmas catalog was the ALL NEW Swayback Jack in....yep....bubba gum. :thumbdn:

So how 'bout you...tell me the Case knives you would NEVER buy....

I'm not really a fan of Purple Spiney Oyster.

I'm a fan of the Cash knives though.

I think you've pretty much covered mine with your dislikes. My one point of contention with your statements is the Johnny Cash and John Wayne sets. I have complete sets of both due to my admiration for each man. I do agree that pink does not belong on knives or guns though.

There are quite a few models that I wouldn't buy..
That said, it is the variety they are offering that keeps some people interested and products selling.. The different versions might just help attract new people to our great hobby too...

If making these different versions helps Case keep their doors open, I'm all for it.

I dont like any of them flashy colors, I think a traditional knife should look traditional, but, some have made it their goal, to collect and display a variety of patterns and scales, so I can understand why one would buy them.

To me it means case's bubba gum for example is a no no.

Of course I dont consider myself a collector, maybe an accumulator, I dont put my knives on a shelf, I use em, and the ones that are on R&R stay in a box. :p

Tru Sharp (no "personality")
Stone scales (heavy)
Anything garrish (bright Christmas colors, etc.)

Other than that, I really love Case knives, I just need to find more of them in CV.

There's a lot of Case knives I would never buy. I suppose I might buy some of the pink stuff for my wife if she was interested, but that's not for me. I'm not terribly interested in any of their fancy stone or abalone stuff, or the garish-colored multi-bone stripes, or the laser engraved dogs/ pheasants etc. Honestly, I'm not interested in any of their laser embellished stuff. A lot of their jigging patterns leave a lot to be desired- it's hard to find well-jigged bone on a Case anymore, though they seem to be getting a bit better in this regard.

I'm not interested in any of the "heavenly bone" or the BSA, or the John Deere, or the Brooks & Dunn, or any of that promotional stuff. :EDIT: Scratch that, I do like the "heavenly bone". The color on that is nice, and the cross is tasteful.

I don't have a problem with their stainless at all- I have plenty of Case knives in stainless, and I'm sure I'll buy plenty more.

The stuff I DO like are the Tony Bose collabs, and a lot of the more traditional knives, with nice bone or stag, with classy colors and nice jigging. I like that they're doing more and more knives in stag. I like that they are using several different shields, and that they have such great variety. They still do more than enough of the stuff I like for me be able to get everything I want. I agree with 338375- they can make anything they want- they can make a special "Liberace Edition"- with rhinestones and glitter, and that's fine with me. So long as they can stay afloat, and still put out good quality, American made knives, and keep at least some of them "tasteful", then good for them.

I guess any other handle material than what was traditional in the old days. I don't like logo stuff, or something capitalizing on a name. Some of the Case stuff is getting a little too something for me. Almost as bad as the Franklin Mint Colt .45 knives. Like Case is reaching a little too far for the collector market. Like when Winchester was coming out with a new commemritive every week.

Hope Case don't go the way of Boyds Bears.:(

My first Case was a Cash Baby Butterbean, and I'll probably get the rest of the Cash models as well, but there are quite a few models and designs I'll never buy. My wife was asking about a pink knife to carry in her purse, so I may buy one for her, but some of them don't appeal all that much to me. Don't much care for the Brooks and Dunn (not a fan) or the John Deere (although I own one), but I might buy one or two of the John Wayne models.

I'm glad you started this thread red96ta. I just got the new SMKW catalog and Ihave to believe Case is going in the wrong direction. Maybe the general public wants all these handle materials. I believe they should stick with the chosen tried and true.
Barbed wire? Come on. Borderline I might say. The rest just too far in my opinion.
I say stick with bone, jigged and smooth, plastic, wood, stag and pearl.
On the upperclass one like Tony Bose collaberations put on the Mammoth, but there's no way I would spend upwards of $200.00 for a production knife with old dug up elephant tusks.Save that for the handmades.
I do apologize to those that like the stuff with my strong opinion, and I guess commemoratives are ok, but I just feel Case is getting carried away by some marketing guy that doesn't really collect knives.
They did make a big hit with the new Tony Bose Arkansas Hunter though. But thats another thread coming.

CASE knives I admire, but with such a vast range and a gimmick orientated marketing strategy it's inevitable that there are many knives most of us would shun:D Most of the garish colour options and name associations have been covered already, and rightly, majority of them are very vulgar.

But more controversially, how about patterns;) ? Can't get interested in Toothpicks of any kind nor the ghastly Ruslock (or is it Rustlock..), then there's some eysore whose name I can't recall but it's large is an one handed opener and is Hunter something or other.. over 4" not sure anybody HAS bought one:eek:

I'm devoted to my conventional CASE models in 'proper liveries', Slimline Trapper,Stockman and Texas Jack plus the other suspects.

I had sworn off Case (but I still want a Tony Bose model) until I saw an SFO red box elder trapper on the SHC specials page. It really caught my eye, and it was cheap enough that I took the plunge. It looks great! It's a unique knife, and I'm glad I got it.

There are a lot I'll avoid, like most of the colors mentioned (plus "Periwinkle", Caribbean Blue, Lime Green, and the mottled green/blue mess that I've seen), things in tins that add $50 to the cost of the knife, commemoratives and patterns I don't like, etc.

One thing I find really annoying is when they offer a pattern I like in nothing but those hideous colors. The Mini Trappers w/Wharncliff fall into this category. I broke down and bought the Caribbean Blue one, as it was the least offensive, but it's still too garish to be seen with in public.

After getting both the Mid-Folding Hunter and the Russlock I don't think I'll bother with any more of their liner locks. They haven't figured out you don't need pressure on the backspring with a liner lock.

Another: The Slimlock. While I like the look of these I just cannot see what makes them worth $160+.

I say the same thing with the production knives with Mammoth Ivory. It still has tumbled blades and regular production F/F, besides the fancy bolster. I agree with the slimlocks too.
I hope Case is listening.
Ebony...Bring back Ebony

I personally dislike the really unusual colors. Red, sure. Brown? Okay. Black? Okay. Yellow, like Mooremaker does? Bring it. Pink? Blue? Neon green? PURPLE, for God's sake? NEVER.

Heck, I've re-dyed one Case. The bone on my Bonestag CV stock discolored strangely after a mineral oil soak, so it got a soak in some black Rit. Now it's a nice ebony bone. :)

Did you dunk the entire knife, or just "paint" on the dye? I'd love to darken the red on my CV Peanut.
