Case knives you would NEVER buy....

I am laughing a bit about the bubba gum knives. I bought a single blade trapper bubba gum. I like it a lot, but my wife calls it a "tampon knife". She asks how many proofs of purchase I needed.

Did I mention she is a bit of a smarty-pants?
Ouch! My wife is like that, too.

Surprised she didn't accuse you of getting it from one of those blister pack "tool boxes for ladies", with the pink scissors, screwdriver, and 2oz. hammer...

I think some of Case's recent marketing decisions have been influenced by their execs seeing blue and pink SAKs being offered for sale at checkout stands. Hey, if the ever-popular "young person" demographic is buying "cool" Victorinox stuff, why not make Case "cool" with hip colors, too? The problem is they don't get that they're comparing $12 checkout stand knives to $50 things that usually have to be ordered sight unseen.

The print version of the SMKW catalog can get downright funny with page after page of the same knives rehandled or repackaged for one marketing gimmick after another. It's kind of pathetic, actually, seeing a company flounder around like that. "Maybe we can figure out SOMETHING they'll buy!"

It's like Case's 'baby girl' knife.....I have two girls and the absolutely LAST thing on my mind was to buy a pink peanut that says 'baby girl' on the blade. What would they say at work if they didn't know I had just had a new girl? "hee hee....did they give you that as a reward for your time in prison?"

I won't buy a single blade CV trapper in red bone, because its too close to a lipstick color!

And why spend an extra $10 when you can get the same thing in yella>???

Yellow lipstick?:D

But you are right. Why not more Amber Bone across the product range???

I could deal with someone wearing that red lipstick.

but save me from someone wearing yella lipstick !!!!

Also I guess that if Case are making all those lurid colors, they are selling them to someone!!

I think most of the knives you guys are having a problem with are SFOs. I'm sitting here flipping through the '08 Case catalog- the actual Case factory catalog- not Shepherd Hills or SMKW, and it's not bad at all. Yes, there are the laser-embellished lines, which I'm not crazy about, but other than that, the stuff's pretty traditional.

There are 22 different patterns in Amber Bone, and 17 in stag, not counting red stag. I think most of the overtly obnoxious, tacky stuff they make is the SFO stuff. And what is Case going to do, refuse to make knives people are ordering from them? They're a business, they've gotta respond to market demand. I don't think anyone wants them to go the way of Schrade or Camillus.

Forgot before; won't buy anything with a half stop again..

I was gonna mention that... SFOs and the branded knives, like John Deere, etc.... Its not exactly case trying to find a marketing niche... Its the company that owns the brand or idea, finding their marketing niche by contracting case to make knives for their brand or idea... Case is just smart enough to know they can make a buck by by doing SFOs.

IMHO, anyway.

All depends on your taste... I'll buy(one of my favs-at lease it ain't yeller :p) the bright red bone looooong before I'll buy anything with stag or a stag look a-like on it(I don't exactly hate stag, but close to it.)

Why don't you like half stops? I kind of prefer them since in my experience knives that have them have a bit more "snap" to them, but it's not a deal breaker either way.

Am I missing something? The red is bone, the yella is delrin. We're talking about CV, right? I haven't seen case make yalla bone CV, gotta look at the more expensive Moore Maker is you want yella bone.

What I mean is that I would rather have the same knife in yellow delrin than gaudy red bone

I hate 'em too. Open and close. Cut out the middle man.

I think you've pretty much covered mine with your dislikes. My one point of contention with your statements is the Johnny Cash and John Wayne sets. I have complete sets of both due to my admiration for each man. I do agree that pink does not belong on knives or guns though.

What about for a girl? They may like that color. Surely someone is buying these. A guy who spends to much money(in his wifes opinion) on knives might want to appease his lady with a nice "pinky". They think these are cute.:D

I like half stops, it saves my nails!
I pull out the blade with the nail nick, then at the half stop pinch it open.
When a strong snap opens without a half stop, I seem to break my nail !!

The giraffe patterned scales look really strange to me. I wouldn't get one of those or the zebra ones. Just my opinion.

Open and close (on your finger ):D

All a matter of taste of course, I for one favour half-stops,helps with cleaning&oiling too:thumbup:

Definately a preference thing. I have been bitten with round bolsters. Half stops appear to be better made, or easier to make a better fit anyways, and they have less wear I imagine.I have a few and I like them alright. They just don't get grabbed as often as the smoothies.

Just pulled out my 78' Case Camper, it has CV blades a jigged bone handle and was probably one of the last consistent quality Cases made.
