Case Large 4.25" stockman

awesome thread guys
I have a large walnut bone and script shiled coming next week or so, will post infos and pics as it arrives

I see some great examples in the posts above, the queen #49 looks amazing as do the moore and Eye, is the buck out of production? any infos on that one? (made by buck or camillus, steel?)
@yablanowitz: is the 3rd a 47? just for comparison as it's the biggest I have currently (non gec), and the last 2? cannot recognize them (looks like the last is a 032?)

thanks in advance
Maxx

Top to bottom: 75, two-spring 47, three-spring 47, 18 and 44.

Great pocketknife, the 4 1/4" stockman pattern is a great "do it all" knife!

The Queen #49 (their version of the 4 1/4" stockman) in Amber Carved Stag Bone and D2 steel, is just about the cream of the Cattleking crop!

Regarding the Buck 307, it's no longer in production. Was made for Buck by Camillus, they had all the tooling for it. When Camillus shut down (around 2007, I believe), all that tooling went away. Buck no longer has the means to produce it, without re-tooling for it ($$$$). A whole bunch of people, myself included, have been wishing Buck will re-release a 307 identical to the Camillus version (maybe upgraded/carbon steel, and a flat grind in particular). I'm not real optimistic about that, though. :(

The 307's steel is widely believed to be 440A. It sharpens up easily and takes a very fine edge (which is why it's one of my favorites). Some versions (at least) of the 307 have carbon steel backsprings (including mine), which take on a very dark patina.

Camillus had their own identical version of this knife, with a Camillus shield. Both can occasionally be found on a certain 'auction site'. I haven't re-checked in a few months, but a short while back, a bunch of 307s turned up there for sale. Somebody had been hoarding 'em, I suspect. Might still be relatively easy to find a 307.

Damnit, Elliot....

If I could, I would ding you for posting knife porn on the forum.

Honestly, no kidding at all now.... that has to be one of the finest examples of a stockman I have ever seen. Period. I have a few stockman patterned knives now, and have had even more over the years. But I have NEVER seen a clip, a wharnie and a long punch on the same knife. Much less one with ram's horn. And to finish it off in my favorite knife steel, D2.... all I can say is WOW.

You know, sometimes a knife just hits the sweet spot. To me, that is absolute knife perfection. Thanks for posting those great pics.

Robert

(I can't ding you, right? :D )

Well, you can't ding me at the moment, Robert, but if you keep calling that sheepfoot a wharnie, I may have to "ding" you!!! ;)

Thanks for the kind remarks on those stock knives, fellas. They are kind of addicting...both the production versions as well as the customs. It's a long and slippery slope...trust me.

thanks for the infos guys! thanks a lot

I'll see if I can find the buck and maybe a camillus, did they make it with carbon blades?
Maxx

Aw, man, just when I think I'm tired of looking at a pattern, you guys go and start this thread. And those D2 Queens & RAT's . . . wow. I'm bowing to my monitor as I type. I'll go dig my Stockmans out and post up some pics here in a little bit.

I have the case cv large stockman, it has been my only edc for the past several weeks doing many tasks, for those who are willing to pocket carry it, or devise other ways, it is a most excellent knife for anything you ask it to do.

Ouch!! Think of me as giving myself my own palm slap to the head.....

My typo was unintentional, and I actually think I was still blinded by that knife.

BTW.... I found on on the 'net.... *gulp*

The one I saw had a very proud owner!

Nonetheless, that might be a rare exception where I might part with the cash needed to own a knife like that. I am still admiring yours!

Dang it, I have looked at these various stockmans (stockmen?) so many times and just go round and round. The Moore Maker is the one I like best but 1095 steel gives me pause. I dont like the shield on the Queen but D2 steel is very appealing (as is that amber bone stag). Am I being silly with the 1095? Reason being is I mostly use mine on fruit and such and I have this dislike for patina and a fear of rust. Will have I have to clean/polish the 1095 blade each time I use it to preserve the finish? Or is it going to tarnish regardless?

1095 and fruit it will patina...I personally think 1095 is one of the greatest steels ever shaped into a knife, but I also like a patina and watching a knife age with me.

I love the Ontario RAT ramshorn cattle/harness knife - the 4 1/4" stockman with an awl made by Queen. I use it a lot, indoors and out.

It is D2. So, I have a 1095 one on its way from Moore Maker.

I have a problem though. I don't like this knife more than the standard stockman of this size. What I mean is that, whilst I love the awl for usual use, it replaces the spey on the Ontario RAT. There isn't much in the world that I appreciate more than a well turned spey blade (I frequently kick myself for having missed the GEC #73s single speys).

I am also aware that if the awl replaced the sheepsfoot blade, I would be just as irked.

Clearly then what I need is a knife with a sheepsfoot, mainclip, spey and awl. Such a knife exists - made by GEC. (and it is an even ender - which is not the best thing - the std 4 1/4" frame puts the blades in just the right places)

But it is too heavy for ordinary trousers  You can see my predicament? :D:D Seems there's no way out of it.

you mean this one? #53 cattle baron?
euhfye.jpg

used it today to cut tape and cardboard using the sheepfoot, one of my all time fav slippies I have, awesome setup and the sheepfoot (gec's version) does not disturb as it's not "in the center" of the knife like regular stockmen, OK it's smaller and way thinner than the regular one of gec's but it's still a great blade

That's the character Maxx, and I hadn't seen it in that rather nice orange jigged bone. Tasty.

The sheepsfoot is frequently a slimmer affair on the stockman/sowbelly.

Think I'll sit here a while and twang my suspenders at it :D :D

I carry it mostly in the front pocket of the cargo pants, they have larger and deeper pockets
with slimmer pants or more "normal/casual" ones it's indeed strange to carry, you feel much more and it's a little less comfy IMO so often prefer a 6347 case

BUT if I can carry it, it has been an EDC companion pretty often in the last months

I managed to get a few dollars spare this pay and this thread inspired me to get my first large stockman...ordered a 4 5/8" rough rider long rifle (RR556), sent it to my US address but when I'm over I will be modding it with my usual swedges and rounding the edges up a bit on the scales.

I only ever carried single and double bladers, but since getting a lockback whittler I like having more blade options (so I can keep one blade with a surgical sharp edge).

4 5/8"!!! Wow that's a big knife for the pocket. Do you carry it on your belt or in your pants? I quit carrying anything over 4" (preferably under) as it feels like I have a piece of rebar in my pocket. I do like the design of that RR, though.

Larger knives I carry in the zip up pockets of my vest usually or in my jeans, granted I dont own and traditionals this big in multi-blades (I have a large coke bottle but its only just over 4" closed)...but depending how heavy this one is I may get a generic leather pouch for my belt. It sure is a biggun and for the price it is ludicrous! I just wish they did carbon blades as that'd be the icing on the cake with bone like that.

I will post pics of it when I can.
