Recommendation? Case large stockman

Nice example. I like Case's jigging a lot more than many of the patterns done by a much more expensive brand that is popular on the porch. If only they would have the jigging run closer to the bolsters instead of buffing a lot of it off.

Thank you and Case sure did hit the mark on that amber jigged bone. I reckon they run the risk of denting the bolster if they aren't careful. Personally, I wouldn't trade it even to the forum Stockman that just came out. Now that price difference is so great, it is opening my eyes to other options. 😊 It use to be that a GEC product did not cost a lot more than a Case. Looks like those days are about gone. I think the Case large stockman is a stout knife and a great value.

Well guys, mine showed up today and I’m less than impressed. The scales are poorly matched, and the pile side is actually quite ugly. Beyond the aesthetics, both of the smaller blades are quite wobbly. The Spey is especially bad. I immediately packed it up to be returned, but don’t even feel like dealing with it. I’m going to try to tighten up the blades enough to reduce the blade play. It was intended as a user anyway, but nonetheless it will serve as a reminder of the risks involved ordering new Case brand knives without being able to inspect them I hope mine is the exception, and those of you that are waiting for yours have better luck. I actually like the pile side better than the mark side. But wobbly blades...that's a no go for me.

I think (and this is not specifically directed at Case, but at ALL knife brands we buy and enjoy) that we should all strive to have higher standards for the knives that dealers send us.

I learned a couple years ago, or more, that I can't order a Case knife sight unseen and expect to be satisfied. I'm fine with that, I have enough Case knives to last me a lifetime.

Sorry to go rambling, my point was supposed to be that we should send poor knives back, on the dealer's dime to boot.

My standard for knives I order is based on whether or not I would walk out of a brick and mortar store with that knife. If the answer is no, the knife goes back. Simple as that.

The Fort The Fort , sorry your new knife was a disappointment, that always sucks. 🙁

My thoughts Lance The Fort The Fort - Case does not go out of their way to match or even closely match scales mark side to pile side on their knives. As to the wobbly blades, are the blades wobbly/loose at the jponts or are they merely flexible as Case blade stock on most of their Stockman knives are thinner than on most other companies Stockman knives. The more you or me open and close the blades on that Stockman you pictured and the one of mine that I pictured the more scratches we're going to get. We can polish and repolish those blades as much as we like they're still going to scratch. The best remedy is to get a patina going on them or put a satin finish on them and then put a patina on them.

Personally, I like the scales on your knife-both sides. It's a good looking knife.

Edited to add: When a thin blade is flexed, it can give the impression that the blade is loose but in fact is an optical illusion that the blade is loose at the joint.

The Fort The Fort Always disappointing to hear of an unpleasant surprise with a new knife arrival. However, we should hear of these things when they happen however renowned a maker or manufacturer.

If there's definite blade-play, not flex, then that's an utter no-no. I really think you MUST return it and demand a replacement or a fix, I know it's a drag (and for me in the EU it's a real chore) but it has to be done to satisfy you and to improve matters. I do know for a fact that CASE has a really goor repair and or warranty service, you should do it and enjoy the knife as a credible user not as a fouler in the nest! Both sides look good in my view and you can only see one side at a time....unless of course your're AI 🤣 AI used to mean something else in my youth..... but still scientific :D

Hi Ed, I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for the compliment on the scales they are actually growing on me. A patina has already started from my daily Honeycrisp apple. Scratches and blade rub don’t really concern me, my Spey and sheepsfoot blades were definitely loose at the joints. I have them tightened up and the knife has been with me all week at work, performing various tasks. As long as it doesn’t loosen up on me, I’m not too concerned about it. I just didn’t feel that it was my job to make a brand new knife acceptable, from a 100+ year old knife company. Again, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. I always enjoy reading your posts, and look forward to corresponding with you again in the future. Lance IMG_8518.jpeg

Didn't mean my remarks to be critical to you Just my thoughts as I stated. Heck, my biggest cimplaint is finding a classy sheath to go with mine.

Will, you’re probably correct that I should’ve returned it. I did send Case a respectful email to make them aware of the situation. It’s been three days now, without a response. That’s almost more concerning to me than the initial issue. Everyone makes mistakes, but it’s how you respond to them that defines you. Thank you for chiming in. I always enjoy your content. Lance
