Case Stockman-Large or Medium

I want to get a friend of mine a Case Stockman, but I'm not sure if I should get a medium or a large. I carry a Medium Stockman most days and I like them quite a bit. I've never seen a Large Stockman in person. What say you all?

The large Case stockman, the 75 pattern, is just about too large for most people to carry in a pocket.
I'd go medium-large. The 47 pattern is 3-7/8" closed. Large enough for nearly any job, and small enough to pocket.

I have both. the med. stockman(3 5/8) is a little too small, the large(4 1/4) is a little too big for me anyway. so what i did was buy a buck 301 that's sized between the 2. it's 3 7/8 and fits like a glove. queen and boker make one at 4" that i've been meaning to check out. but for your friend i would get him the popular med stockman.

It depends. They are both great patterns...

The mediums are still small enough that they are hardly noticeable in pocket, while you can definitely tell the large is in pocket. Even though they are bigger, they still aren't bad to carry. I like the way the large Stockman feel in hand, but I have big hands.

I don't think you could make a wrong choice either way. I never warmed up to the small Stockman. Could be because I have big hands, and I find with the bigger Stockman, its easier to open the blades.

It may be just me, but when you have a large Stockman in hand, it really feels like you got your moneys worth :D

Just to make sure I'm on the same page, when I think of medium Stockman I think of the Case 47 pattern, and large being the 6375 or 6392 pattern

That's a tough one as it has a great deal to do with personal preference.

If you plan to surprise your friend with the knife I would get the medium. Most people could probably get along well with a knife that size but there are many that think the large is too big. I think the chances that your friend would like the knife are greater if you get the medium.

Of course, if it's not a surprise, you could just ask your friend what he prefers but I'm sure you already thought of that.

I vote medium.

Mike, I believe most people call the 18 (round bolster) or 32 (square bolster) patterns "medium" stockman, at 3-5/8" closed.

Yes, so could we just call the 47 pattern at 3 7/8" the standard size? Case simply refers to the 47 as a stockman -- no large and no medium. It's confusing otherwise. No argument that the 4 1/4" patterns are definitely large - way too big and heavy for me to want to pocket carry.

BTW, there's also the 046 humpback stockman at 3 5/8" to consider.

Case confuses the issue by also calling a couple of other patterns "medium" stockmen that are 3 1/4" and 3 3/8" -- I'd say ignore those.

Yeah, I've been confused recently with what qualifies as a "medium" stockman, at least in Case's catalog. Seems to be at least a few different actual patterns that are called "medium". And when it comes to knives like these, the difference in feel and perceived size between 2 knives a mere 1/4" or even 1/8" apart in size can be surprisingly significant. In the pocket the size difference is negligible, but in the hand, with the blade open, a small difference can be huge.

Gmountain: it'd help us to know more about the intended recipient. What's his job? Is he an avid outdoorsman? Does he carry a knife now? Doe he usually wear jeans or something else?

(Even with those questions as yet unanswered, I still vote for a stockman in the 3.5" range.)

You are correct Jeff. I recall seeing the 18 series referred to as medium quite often... I've never had a Case Stockman smaller than the 18 series, so in my tiny little mind, I have always considered the 18 small, 47 medium, and 75 or 92 large.

I have rather small hands myself and the 63032 pattern or the 62032 (Texas jack) are perfect for me. I have a 6347 stockman here on my desk and it is as big as I'd want to go, but I know I'll pretty much reach for the 3-5/8" 63032 every time. I have a buck 310 (single blade) that is 4-1/4" long closed, but it is a lot slimmer than the Case models that long and feels fine in my hand.

My money goes to the 63032. But, you probably ought to put some knives in your hand at a brick and mortar store to be sure. Alternatively, you could do what I sometimes do and just order two or three different sizes and use the one you like the best and keep the others. :D

I have the 6347 (3 7/8"; I like calling it standard) and the 6375 (4-1/4" large). Love them both and do not carry anything smaller. The first goes in a pocket and the second goes in an open, holster type belt sheath. You dont notice the big one on your belt and it not only feels great in your hand but is easily accessible while riding or driving.

Mark asks some good questions here. I'd also add -- what size is this individual? Does he have large, average, or small hands?.

My personal favorite is a Case 64047P at 3 7/8 inches closed but these are now out of production but can still be had on the secondary market. To me this is the perfect Stockman pattern and IMO there is a lot to like about this knife..

1- The size is perfect for a fellow who has above average size mitts. 2- She has (4) blades/tools functioning on only {2} back-springs making it quite pocket-able. 3- She is produced with all Nickel Silver hardware--no brass(very classy appearance and patina's well.) 4- Good vintage hi-carbon steel. 5- Last, but certainly not least, the cutlers who crafted this model were the best Case had and were old school. To get this kind and caliber of pattern today would require a seasoned custom maker and you'd have to endure a substantial fee to acquire.

I can post pix of an example of this pattern if anyone is interested.

Best,
Anthony

3 5/8 would be my pick. I carry the 4 inch Queen at work and my co workers say it's huge. 3 1/4 to 3 5/8. The 4 inch took a week or two to get used to. A 3 1/4 would take work for someone to carry that has never done so.

Yes please Anthony, I'd like a look.

The CASE Large Stockman certainly is large, but I like them a lot even though I have smaller hands. Mind you, giving somebody a smaller knife often leads to them getting interested in the pattern, whereas, handing out a big example can put people off the pattern.

Well, let's see it Anthony. I've never seen one of those. At least not that I know of. Might of seen one someone was using, but didn't notice the extra blade, but I kind of doubt that I'd have missed that. - Ed
