Case Stockman S35vn

I thought the nail nicks looked kind of cool, before I realized they were holes. I thought it was just different machining on the harder steel. I’m not sure how I feel about the holes.

I like the medium stockman pattern, and the round bolsters make them more pocket friendly. And I've had pretty good luck with the S35VN steel. The holes are hideous! What in the world made them think that was a good idea? I'll pass until they go back to nail nicks.

According to the website up in the hills, it's 4 1/8" closed. I think that qualifies it as large, unless I'm mistaken....

That abates my wrath a bit. I thought they were defacing the xx18 pattern.

Except the catalog shot above says 3 5/8 ", which I think does indicate they've deranged the xx18. Fancier steel. fine. But put it in a well-loved pattern or design a new pattern, don't deface a well-loved pattern.

I hope they aren't as desperate and clueless as this looks to me.

I think they did both, the 18 and the big trapper.... hopefully it is just an "option" for both of them, newer steel, identified by the holey nail nicks....

From what I heard, they punched the holes because they were having issues grinding the nail nicks into the S35VN. Not sure of the details, that's just what I heard. They've apparently been sitting in finishing for over a year. Not sure why they're just now shipped to dealers.

Case has been stuck in the same mode for many years.
I'm not entirely sure they know how to effectively move forward.
I think using some upgraded steels is a nice start, but how about a few new patterns.
How about a medium sized Tribal? Or a Trapper Jack? Or an Equal End with a Cap Lifter?
How about making them regular offerings instead of exclusives or Vault Series? Put more thought into their wheelhouse.
They are never ever going to be competitive in the Modern Knife market, how about refreshing stuff for us Traditional Guys.
I love Case Knives and wish they'd get their stuff together and start producing quality knives that we want to buy, instead of just giving us new cover options.

When I first saw that stock photo, the nail nicks looked like those on the past gen CRK Mnandi. The hole on the clip blade is way to close the the spine, imo.

Case is stuck in a rut of confining themselves to their workhorse patterns and using those as a base for chasing the next knife fad.
Tooling costs money, and making a new pattern probably comes with some associated start up cost - money, I get the impression, that Zippo doesn't want to part with.
Case will continue to do what they always do; make the same knife in a million covers, make minor changes, and create a sense of urgency to increase interest and perceived collectability.

I'm always glad to see Case trying something new, but they're always trying to adopt new trends into the current Case portfolio.
I think those... thumb holes?... are an example of what I'm talking about.
In my humble opinion, they should consider expanding the case traditional portfolio to integrate new trends.

the Bradford Flipper was a weird choice, but at least I can say it was an attempt to branch out.
It's like Case lets everyone else go out and do the work of testing the waters and then jumps on the band wagon after it's proven profitable.

Hello,

I don't want to be rude or to be the old timer of the thread but I don't understand how a company can have had some so beautiful and well made knives in the past and changed them for a thicker, less refined design and all of this with some uninteresting steels.
I love to find old Case knives even if I have to restore them. And I never buy a new Case on Internet because I will be disappointed and worst I know there are 50% chance that it will be poorly assembled

The knife market seems to explode, GEC is unable to satisfy it and where are the Case sells and marketing directors ? Please some one could advise them to read a great source of informations ? It's called Blade forums. ;)

Seriously , are they bling ?

PS : about the knife showed on page1 ... the holes ...I eat with my knife so I have to clean it. Those holes are a hell to clean. They want to make real traditional ? Easy, they just have to open their own 1970 catalog. If they have not it , I'm sure they can find it on .... Blade forums 😂

I don't mind the punched nicks, though I also would like to see the S35VN without traditional nicks, if their machining can handle it. I would like to see more steels though. I would love it if they would do a 154-CM run every year, at least.
