Case Stockman S35vn

I don’t mind the holes and might prefer them to nicks as nicks can be hard to clean out. Holes are okay if the steel is tempered right with no sharp inside corners.

I’m just interested in their heat treatment and if they can hold an edge. I do like the 18 pattern but I’d like to see the 47 pattern in this steel.
I have a large trapper with 154cm blades that does pretty well and if they can do s35vn well it can be a good start.

I agree. 🤠
Don't know why anybody would be opposed to a steel upgrade.
But I guess "dyed in the wool" traditionalists would like to keep the same steels their Grandpa had... I don't have a problem with that viewpoint either.
I agree. I don't have an issue with their 420HC, but would like it if they would do some regular runs of something like S35VN, 154CM, or ATS34 every year. I've got a 6-7 of their regular patterns in either 154CM or ATS34 and wish they do more than twice or thrice a decade.

From what I heard, they punched the holes because they were having issues grinding the nail nicks into the S35VN. Not sure of the details, that's just what I heard. They've apparently been sitting in finishing for over a year. Not sure why they're just now shipped to dealers.
Now that you mention it, none of my s35vn knives have nicks 🤔

Buck used a long pull on their S30v Duke and Benchmade does a nick on their s30v/s90v Proper series. They're not classic crescent shaped nicks but they aren't holes either.

My 6318 s35vn Stockman should be delivered Friday; I'll try to post photos if someone else hasn't posted any.

I think Case's issue may have been with their machining. I wonder if they would need to update/upgrade some of that process to get the nail nicks ground in correctly. I forgot about the proper but had thought of the S30V bucks and their nail nicks.

S35VN, multiple blades and pretty good looking bone for under a hundred bucks sounds good to me. The pictures of the punched out nail nicks do look a little odd and I would like to see one of these in person before passing judgement on whether I would like one or not. But they do seem to seem to be very nicely priced in comparison to past Case knives with upgraded steels. Will there be more patterns offered?

I would prefer nail nicks but I don’t think the holes are horrible though.

I understand Case wants to stay relevant but using a vanadium rich steel may not be the way to go.
Something in the Sandvik line like 14c28n or 12c27 would be more Cases speed and I am sure they would be popular. I would definitely try a couple.

Hot out of the mailbox and after about 30 mins of pawing, fiddling and sharpening, here are some pics and observations of my new S35vn 6318 Stockman. Caveat emptor, this is a sample size of one and YMMV!

Hands down, this is the cleanest fresh out of the box Case I've ever received. No grit, grime or polishing compound anywhere.

All blades have good snap on both open and close and pulls are solid 5-6 all the way around, even the Sheepsfoot. The Spey does have a tiny, almost imperceptible bit wobble but the Sheepfoot and Clip have none. Backsprings are flush at open and close on all blades. The Spey lays on the liner when closed but there is no other blade rub, even when opening/closing.

There is a small gap in the backspring on the sheepfoot side of the spring. Other than that, the backsprings and liners have no gaps. All cover to bolster transitions feel smooth to my thumb with no gaps anywhere.

The edge grinds are fairly even. On the 30° inclusive setting, my Sharpmaker raised a burr on both sides of all 3 blades within 5 strokes along the entire edge. The burr easily came off of each blade with one or two reverse strokes per blade and all 3 would slice newspaper and shave arm hair.

This is the best fitted and finished regular production Case knife I own. I have over 2 dozen Case knives and only 1 or 2 are close to this one.

Thanks for the thoughtful review. I'm convinced to give one a try. I will be driving past the sheep herders store on a Tuesday , going to stop and hand pick a winner.

Anyone seen this yet?
Thoughts?

Very functional

The only thing that looks different about these are the holes, otherwise they look exactly the same as other Case knives.
I really can't figure out why there's so much hatred for these? Did everybody hate the Scagel knives too?
