Cat houses

Nice set-up. I took one of those small plastic dog houses; the kind the top snaps on. A 42 gal 3mil trash bag just fits over it and provides a good barrier. Then wrapped the whole thing with space blanket (re-useable type) so it hangs over entryway. Inside I stuffed an old wool blanket. This is in the garage but should work outside with plastic on outside.
A sheeple co-worker of mine insists that cats can't survive outside without getting sick from this disease or that one. His cats never see the light of day unless it's through a window. Our 13 year old outsider has lived like a tiger on the grasslands.

Tedwca, those cats are beautiful! I remember as a young hillbilly that Montgomery Wards had a Ocelot for sale in their pet dept. for $40.00! I wanted that thing bad! I never got it though. How much meat do those kittys eat?

Awesome Cheetah!

Very appropriate for a knife forum, too. Their genus name, acinonyx, roughly translates to "Onyx Sabre". They are the only cat that can't retract their claws. Those blades are always out, baby!

We have a couple of cat houses out, too. One is simply a plastic pre-fab dog house with a bag of cedar shavings and a polar fleece blanket in it. the other is a hinged-lid storage tote on its side with an electric heating pad and fleece in it.

We put them out for the ferals who hang out nearby. I have tried to catch them, so we could get them to a vet. I have had both of these two in my trap several times each. They always get out though, a couple of times while I was actually holding the trap. We did catch two adult ferals and one litter of five kittens. All had feline leukemia.

Here are some pics of the latest ferals, as well as some of the indoor moggies.

Punkin, the elusive, wary, long-haired feral.

Winky, near one of the houses. Notice her right eye? We really want to catch her and get that taken care of. :(

Molly is at least 18 years old. We took her in for "hospice care" when she was abandoned. Its been almost a year, and she's still with us.

These last two were adopted from a shelter on Veteran's Day of '06, so we named them after some famous veterans.

McCain Fine Gold, looking uncharacteristically regal. He usually just looks sleepy.

Stormin' Norman Bates, our little psycho-cat, looking uncharacteristically calm. He does, however, look characteristically goofy. :p

HD, we have one ike the fluff ball you have, he is part Maine Coon, it looks like your little kitty is also.

To all, yes the boxes are heated. They have a small pet bed heater in them. They look like a mini waterbed heater and take the energy of a 7 watt light.
The ice chest house is just that. I figured its already insulated and water proof. It like the other houses sit on 2 pressure treated 2x2's.

For those of you out there that don't like cats, I used to be just like you...until Tater came along. This cat has killed 20+ snakes in 2 summers. Along with everything else.

I used to have a kitty Miss Foo Foo who would snag minnows from the creek with her claws. She would only eat the heads;)

Kitty Angel the smaller one kills bats out of my upstairs:thumbup: In fact the bats moved out of my house since she moved in:)

Norm and McCain have no kills on record, but they have seriously annoyed a few ladybugs and one spider.

Molly has killed more throw rugs than I care to count. (The world is her litterbox)

That could turn me into a Fan of Cats too. (I'm a Dog person.)

With snake season just around the corner here.

Talk about killer kitties?

My little SAW gunner manning his GP. I took him in one winter night when he followed me home from the parking lot.

I saw him out in the road a few paces up from our driveway- there was no mistaking that orange fur- and I knew what must have happened. By all indications it was probably over quickly, which has to be the only redeeming grace of being hit by a car. It had to have happened between the time Kathy got home and when I left for work- a window of less than two hours- but we never heard sqealing brakes or anything else. I came back in the house to get a shovel to move him out of the road (and out of Kathy's sight) and I told her. I had to leave for work with her crying, and me close to it myself.

It is so senseless. Why don't people take care of their animals? I'll be asking that over and over while I'm digging the hole in a little while.

Spay, neuter and adopt a stray. Please.

man it's so hard when you know it could have been avoided by the owners taking some responsibility, we lock ours in most of the time and they only get access to the yard when we're around to keep an eye on things.

Here's our two, Morris (Grey) saved from the RSPCA as a kitten and Riley's pregnant mum was found and needed fostering as no one would adopt a cat and litter we had her thru her pregnancy and then looked after the little-uns 'till they were old enough to go to new homes, we both saw her and had to let her stay.

Thirteen years ago, a young lady I was dating bought me a nearly year old flamepoint (white) Siameese tom from a pet store, knowing my ex-wife had kept our six house bound cats when she sold me the house. I lived in this house cat-free for a while, but that young lady thought I needed a pet for Valentines. He had history, having been 'sold' five previous times - and returned - he is exceedingly devious and mischevious - and very friendly. That kindly young lady didn't know I was allergic to cats. That cat, Casper, is the perfect pet for me.

Casper aggravating Sheba by taking her favorite spot on a baker's rack by the sliding glass door to the back deck, turned cat stand. When she finally gave up and left, he did, too. Yeah, he's a jerk.

Last summer found Casper suffering, pink eyes and scratching, diagnosed as an allergy to the new food - or to me. Yep, the cat takes the very same antihistamine that I do to stand him. Initially, I found that I could bathe the cat every couple of weeks with a vegetable based soap - like Murphy's - and reduce his dander (That triggers the allergic reaction - not the hair, it just 'tickles'!). Chlorpheniramine is sufficient for both of us... cats hate pills. It's easier to give them a bath.

I married that young lady nine years ago. We had six house bound cats until an older tabby, who was on heart medicine, passed on last year. Casper is still aggravating me - and still sleeps next to my face every night. Some days they are like bookends or throw pillows with feet, other days, you want to shoot them. Still, they are the best pets I've ever had. I, a confirmed dog guy, didn't touch a cat until I was twenty. If you've never tried one as a pet, you are really missing something!

Thanks for the stories, guys. Our only female, honey bun, showed up one day, stick and bones, caked in mud, starved to death with cigarette burns on top of her head.
That was 5 years ago. She has become one of the best!

Very true.

It has always sort of puzzled me that a lot of the so called "cat haters" are often macho type guys who enjoy hunting and outdoor stuff. Not all of course, I'm sorta generalizing here so bear with me.;)

Yet to me kitties more characterize the fierce independant self reliant hunter or outdoors person than a dog does. I like dogs, I own 5, so I want to put that out as a fact that I am not a dog hater.
