I just can't see how the seller can really prove the claim?????

agreed Bear, that was one of my original thoughts and we havent hit it very hard. You figger that obeechee is laminate an the top slab is like vineer(sp). I guess it is conceivable that the piece of wood with that contributed may have had, just picking reasonable #, 20-30 slabs which would all have basically the same graining and so there could be numerous identical knives out there. THe only thing that makes me think they are indeed the same knives is, who among us is that anal and detail orientated to be looking back through calalogues, notice the graining and say "Hey, I have one that looks just like that"? I know its not me. I could indeed have the originals, and the cat., look at them all the time and still not put 2 and 2 together. Of couse, I'm nowhere near the brightest candle in the church.:D

Chris, the grain is like a fingerprint. some slabs may be similar, but you'd never find two exactly like the two in the picture if you looked for fifty years.

They are clearly the catalog knives. The pictures prove it. Other provenance may be available because the seller probably knows the history of the knives. Nobody has asked the question that I know of and the buyer will probably get the full story.

There are plenty of collectors who would love to have that package at that price.

Value is something you decide is "worth it". To me, those knives don't have any added value just because they were in a catalog.

Actual monetary value is decided by market factors--what buyers will pay for a specific item at a specific time.

What we like personally is a different kind of value that may be far different from actual monetary value.

In any event, it looks like e-Bay has spoken on this unique item and grousing about it won't change anything.

It may prove to be an unwise investment, but who can say for sure?

;)

Grousing means complaining and as I stated before, I was merely posting my opinion. Your post seemed directed at me which is why I responded.

I'm betting this was a case of bidding frenzy, much like a feeding frenzy in the wild. I see it alot and I'd bet the winner is now thinking, "what was I thinking?". Been there and done that myself.

Many times the selling price has nothing to do with the true value of an item, but simply the buyers idea of it's value. It's a subjective thing.

Naw.....I thought the whole reason for the thread was complaining about the high price for those knives.......maybe I was wrong.

It's happened before.

:)

No, I wasn't the seller......but I did find it quite fascinating. Odd auction. Never saw anything like that before.

And......I wouldn't buy them myself, but I know enough collectors to know there are some who would jump at the chance--which several obviously did.

I think they are the catalog knives, and IF I were that big into collecting, and there was proof, I.E. a cert from Buck, I would have been interested, although, I couldnt see paying the end price... I am more of an accumulator and user though, :D

Great thread, and an eye opener to me. They are the knives in the catalog, for the reasons BG pointed out. Just too impossible to actually find one of each model, with identical markings, and proper date codes. Going out on a limb here, but those are the knives from the catalog.
Now the eye opener part for me is that I would have figured that they would be worth more than a standard 110/112 off the shelf. I guess what I have learned here is that people have diferent opinions on stuff. Who would have thunk it? :) I dont collect stuff like that but if I would have seen the auction, I may have tossed some of my son's college fund at it. :D Not as much as it ended up going for but still.

It appears that from the vote most with the exception of BG that people think that the knives were the catalog knives and that they wern't worth the final selling price. I knew it!

I think they would be worth the money if they had been stamped on the Blade... Photo knife... With out that, they are just a 110 and a 112 to me... Joe had a knife on ebay that had Photo Prototype (or something like that) on the Blade... It did real good... ...
