Cats and dogs.....my cat....

I knew a lady from a broken marriage with two teenaged tattooed/pierced boys she let run wild to include school drop-outs and they had a huge Akita/Doberman mix raised from a puppy and they bragged how the dog was the last survivor of the litter as others were destroyed due to being insane psycho dogs......meanwhile the dog was manhandled and roughhoused by the boys and they and the woman only yelled at the dog to make it mind, which it did but less and less...

Unsuprisingly, one day the woman was trying to shoo the dog out of the kitchen, and the dog took on the classic "i'm fixin' to kill you, suckah" of hackles raised and bouncing on front paws and scared the bejabbers out of the woman who retreated to bedroom until her sons came home from smoking dope or whatever and everything seemed normal but they took the dog to be put down that day....and cried...but it really was their own fault from start to finish....dysfunctional families make dysfunctional packs and a dog MUST understand it is the low low man on totem pole or it WILL push to rise to top....one of first signs of the domination game is the dog will get on top of something to look down at you....it needs to be nipped right there.....

Karda there wasn't a pic in the other thread of your red tail boa. Let's see it! At over 20 years old I bet it's a big one! I love snakes, had a few pythons at one time but they are all gone now. I hope to get another some day.

I'll have to ask the wife about a pic and have to scan it, so it could be awhile.
Monster was only about 14' when he passed on.

Sounds like you better get cha a whip and a chair, maybe a 45 for a worst case scenario.

Fine looking dog. Best be kind to him when he hits the 150 mark, being in charge is highly overated, let him be in charge and live.

I always have a .45 at the ready.. but he's better controlled with a Scooby snack :-)

Agreed... totally their fault.
Ive always had large breed dogs and have never had any issues ..
Most pets are like kids..If you teach them right from wrong and give them structure when they are young; you normally don't have problems when they are grown.

WOW! 14 feet is definitely on the high end of size for red tails, especially for males. That's impressive! My largest snake was a carpet python who grew to about 7 feet, and he was a handful even at that size. A buddy had a 6-7 foot red tail and he was pound-for-pound much stronger than my pythons. They are such amazing creatures. I did get tired of having big rats around all the time for food though. I developed a special hatred for the things. People would always ask if I was afraid of getting bitten by the snakes. I got tagged a couple times but it was never bad, just a bunch of pin-pricks really. But I had a serious bite from a feeder rat... bit me damn near to the bone on my middle finger. That one took quite a while to heal. After that I started buying them in bulk pre-frozen. My wife (girlfriend at the time) was not fond of having a big bag of rats in the freezer...

I even wondered over their tale of vicious littermates and wonder what the place was like where these people found the dog.....the dogs might all have had a screw loose but far more likely they all came from a place of vicious people and got bent early on and likewise went to bent people who finished the wrecking job....

Lovely cat and dog pix, thank you all for sharing

We also had a couple ball pythons and a 20' albino burmese. The burmese was just too huge and too cranky. When he wanted to squeeze you, you had to get help to get loose. Anyways, I couldn't get the wife to look yet, so I found the only pic of monster that I have. From when we worked at the pet store and the school would bring classes thru. The wife and I would put on a show. We used to take him to schools for that also. He was very gentle and well behaved. Here I was still a young man and he was still a string bean.

Nice!

Here is a picture of Steve the Carpet Python. He was feisty but I still miss him...

Handsome snakes! I love snakes but I dont think my wife would deal with the frozen rats next to the hamburger meat.

I try to always go with the flow but truth be told I never had much use for snakes myself. Call me skeered, I don't know. Just never was even low on my pet list.

But yall that's into em, more power to ya, please don't bring em to my house when you come to visit though, iffen you don't mind that is.

I took care of snakes as a lab asst. back in the day (Tickled the boss that I was a History major.) They were pretty dull compared even to the lizards, amphibians, and fish - much less the mammals.

Mammals are the worst. I can watch dogs play all day, cats play all night, dirt daubers roll mud all week, ants dig all month.... but mammals?...The ones i spend time with all day make me so glad to get home to my dogs:D

I see we're hijacking this thread for posting our snake pictures? Count me in. I'm glad I'm not the only crazy reptile lover.

This is Kaiba the Corn Snake, and Veja the Brazilian Rainbow Boa. Veja is still a juvenile, and but the pic of her in my hand is older. She's a bit bigger now.

Ain't that the truth!

Singlegrind, great photos... I especially like your rainbow boa. They are awesome little boas. A little harder to take care of because of the high humidity requirements, but certainly worth it. The rainbow sheen on their skin is pretty amazing. I had a macklot's python whose skin had a similar sheen but not nearly as bright.

Thanks philllll! She was a little fussy when she was a youngin, some nips here, refusing food there, but she's starting to mellow out with age/size, like you'd expect with any jungle-snake. People forget that when you're a baby snake in the rainforest, everything that moves is either food, or needs to be scared away. As you get bigger, you move to the top of the food chain and the other critters generally leave you alone.

I've got both of them in bioactive vivarium systems with multiple soil layers, and a misting system for the boa. The plants really hold in a lot of humidity. She likes to be buried in the soil too, or under some bark or her bowl. It's a little less predictable where Kaiba will be when I get home, but he's not up on top very often, which is why I like that pic.

I keep a log with feeding dates and amounts, shed dates and quality, and any other notable events like illness. It really helps with a "trickier" snake like the BRB, but it also helps with overall husbandry quality.

Next on my reptile list is a Carpondro (Carpet Python x Greet Tree Python) or a Jaguar Carpet Python, but I was originally thinking about a Sunbeam Snake because of their iridescence. I have a colubrid and a boa though, so I think it's only fair to get a python next. I do love a nice Carpet Python, kinda like the one you posted above! Beautiful snakes, and usually puppy-dog tame.

Kamidog, I think some of em look the same from the front too! Carpet Pythons and Green Tree Pythons have very canine faces in my opinion, as do Emerald Tree Boas :D
