Caving (pics)

Hey Matt...

As long as your hometown is about 4-5 km offshore in Lake Erie, due South of St.Thomas, those coordinates work perfectly...

You may want to look out your window and make you you haven't snapped off and are Adrift in Erie!! :)

If you have,, you may want to grab a fishing pole,, those are some good Rainbow and Lake Trout Waters!! LOL :)

Hey Normark,

Supposedly my coordinates are 43° 14' 12" N 79° 45' 51" W and I'm not south of St. Thomas??????

Hmmm... I'm not sure where the confusion is with the GPS coordinates, but I wonder if people know they can just plug coordinates into Google maps and bring a location up instantly. For example, go to google maps:

http://maps.google.com

And enter the coordinates into the search bar. North is positive, South is negative, East is positive and West is negative. Therefore, for the coordinates that DOC posted, you would enter:

43 14' 12", -79 45' 51"

You can use google map's link to this page to get a URL to that exact spot on the map.

I have friends who travel quite a bit, and I encourage them to post GPS coordinates of the places they go to so it's easier to follow their movements. This is one of the reasons why I finally bit the bullet and got a handheld GPS. When you get somewhere cool, mark the waypoint and when you get back home you can show people on a map exactly where you were.

Note that google maps offers satellite imagery of various places on the map. If I was to post my house's GPS coordinates, you'd practically be able to see into my backyard (not all locations allow you to zoom in quite so close). For example, here's the google maps satellite image of a 4 wheel trail I was on in Redington Pass, Arizona a few weeks ago. This particular location is called "the triangle" because of the three roads that come together at that spot. It also happens to have a US Forest Service plaque that shows the trails in the area. This is interesting to me because no other map that I currently own shows me all the roads in that particular area in the way that this does.

Anyway, a cursory examination of the GPS coordinates in use in this thread doesn't seem to put anyone in the middle of a lake. Maybe I'm missing something?

Cool pics. I grew up in southern Ontario and spent many years in Oshawa and Bowmanville. Back in the late 70s I also caught many a Rainbow and Brown trout in the Bowmanville, Wilmot creeks and the Ganaraska river. Used roe bags that I tied myself after curing the eggs with Borax. A fishing rod in one hand a .22 in the other and a Honda XL 250 dual purpose motorcycle that went anywhere and everywhere. Good times :D
Hey....please explain how to post pics here. Thanks.

Hmmm, I am rusty at pic posting. Will try a few more ways to do it.

Well, this seems to be the only way that I can do this, just by a link.
