CBS Survivor!

Did anyone see the protests at CBS HQ by the
P.C.T.A. for "rat rights"? These animal activists were upset because the show actually had the participants cooking and eating rodents!!! ROFLMAO!!!

Maybe they could sponsor "be kind to rays" day next. Souvenier t-shirt only $29.95

Hmmmm. Wonder what was said.

Did you know that the USAF Survival instructor goes through approxiamtely 1 year of training before they are released to instruct thier first class on their own.

Six months learning to survive in every global climate, under the harshest of conditions, with extremely limited resources and then another six months learning how to teach these skills to others.

The attrition rate in my class was around 75 %. This existed even with a screening program where only the most physicially fit and intelligent individuals were choosen.

The USAF instructor spends many tdy's training other branch (USMC, USN, and USA) survival instructors. Other services instructors only receive a brief amount of training before beginning thier 3 year hitch (temporary duty away from thier normal job) as a survival instructor. This is in contrast to the Air Force, where the survival instructor is a job not just a temporary duty. Thus an E-4 through an E-9 may have been teaching from 10 to 30 years about the art of surviving in any global climate.

Hope that helps clarify a little.

Yes, most of what the Air Force does looks "wimpy" from the outside. But I can guarantee you that their SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) Training is nothing to laugh at. A downed pilot has little else but a sidearm, radio, a knife, and good training to come through everything ok. (My high school Chemistry teacher was an SERE instructor. I learned a lot from him. Some that has saved my life. Didja ever make a charcoal suppository to help stop your diarrhea in the jungle? Well, then you ain't lived yet!)

The Air Force is the only branch of service that sends its people out solo into hostile territory as its normal operating procedure.
I've met a few SERE instructors, and will get to meet some more up close and personal in another year. Personally, I'm glad they intend on giving me the best training they can beat through my thick skull...

Haven't stooped as low as to watch the show.
I have however caught and eaten "Pack rat", which may be the rat you speak of. Pack rat is a prime survival food from my perspective , because it offers so much to a person in need. They live in a "Rats nest" which is easily identified after you've seen your first one. The rat is nocturnal, and probibly home in daylight hours. Quickly tear the nest apart, with your stick handy and bludgeon a healthy meal. He lines his nest with excellent dry fluffy tinder. The nest itself makes great kindling. In the western US the nest might be stocked with Pinion nuts. I'm getting hungry already!
To cook 'em, I clean out the guts, singe the hair off, put 'em back on the coals skin side down, medium rare.

Nope these were "real" rats. The type you'd find in most cities, towns, countries, etc. they probably got there from a ship. Personally, I'd be out looking for snakes and birds to trap/kill. I'd rather eat snakes than rats.

Historicaly, any large city under seige, runs out of rats shortly after the food supply runs short. I've never eaten a city rat, but I bet I would in a pinch. Supposed to be hich in vitamin c.

Eating rats that live in most large cities seems like a good way to end up very sick very fast. They don't call them sewer rats for nothing.

They're on an island right?
With all the food the sea has to offer, I sure as heck would'nt be eating a rat.

Hi All,
All the wildlife on the island except the rats are off limits. The place is part of a park system.
Just because you've got water doesn't mean that you've got fish. Thier location was picked in part because the sea lacks any real bounty.
Stress was intentionaly built into the program. Lack of food is one of the surest of stress builders. Most of these people haven't gone more than a day or two, at the most without eating. Think about it, this is designed for exciting TV. It's all about RATINGS for the network. This is just a business venture. Every one of those people made some money on the deal, plus got in a little vaction time on the mainland.
