Central Texas Knife Show

I live in Cedar Park, right outside of Austin! However, I am 16. Would I be out of place at one of these things?

Edit: Forgot I just turned 16

Not at all Colin8. it is a very relaxed, and family oriented atmosphere. You would be quite welcome. Mike

I would like to add that Brad Duncan will be at the show. I also noticed that when I was mentioning all of the guys that may have slip joints I forgot to mention J.B. Moore.
It wont be long now!!

Here's an elegant piece from Brion Tomberlin. Small Moran style fighter, kind of reminiscent of an ST-24 only in personal carry size. The blade is five inches of 5160, the handle is of course ironwood, and nickel silver fighter guard.

Hang on to your hats folks. A spectacular piece from Harvey Dean below.

Harvey's description: "It has a 9 1/4 inch feather patterned blade. The width of the blade is 1 9/16 inches. The blade is approximately 1/4 inch thick at the guard. The guard and ferrule are made from 416 stainless and are engraved by Terry Theiss. The knife has a mortis tang mammoth ivory handle with three 18-karat gold pins. At this time there are very few people offering feather patterns, especially in large Bowies. This is the first Bowie I have made in the feather patterned Damascus."

That last bowie is awesome. It is reminiscent of the one Steve Dunn had at the Reno show 2 yrs ago.

So true, when I saw the pic, I assumed it was a Dunn, I guess because of the pattern and the engraved ferrule/guard, but then read that it was from Dean, each is amazing, and it would be hard to choose between them, that's for sure. :)

Nice stuff all around.

A 9 3/4" blade of 9260 with some real pretty snakewood and nickel silver fittings.

I made it to the Austin show and it was a few hours well spent. I met Brion and saw this knife up close and personal. The snake wood is beautiful as is the complete knife. Whoever nicknamed it Leopard wood was right on the money. I also had the opportunity to meet and visit with Mike Lovett and his lovely wife Manuela. Neat guy and a very special lady! She makes his sheaths so we had a little bit in common.

I had a chance to visit with many more of my friends there including Johnny Stout, Harvey Dean, The Hinds bothers Roy and Mel, Gary Hicks. Leon Treiber, and many, many more including some "new" friends I just got to meet for the first time.

It was a very good show with something for everyone.

Well, now I am home from the show. I had a blast my self!! How can you not have fun with Barker, Bradshaw, Fitch, Crowell, Ruple and Tomberlin.
The cutting Demo was kick ass. I saw Fitch attempt 16 water bottles in one swipe. One of them got away wounded and one got away untouched. The other 14 were cut in half.
It was cool to see the guys invite some youngsters to cut rope and water bottles. My wife even cut a water bottle.
As far as knives that I made it home with, they include the leopard wood Tomberlin for my wifes collection which I will not recoup that money since it is going into her personal collection which is not for sale unless you 2 1/2 times her money on it.
Picked up a Bradshaw self lock in stag.
Also got one from Dean. It was a stag California hunter.
One other that I traded for was a cool litttle folder from a long time guild member named Peterson.
I hope to send Roger some pics in the next day or two that will show knives and the cutting demo.
This was the Eighth year that my wife Nichelle and I put this show on. Our biggest reason for doing this is for the opportunity to be able to have memorable times with all of our friends that are involved in knives. So far we have accomplished this every year. Our friends are what keeps us wanting to do another show.
I know that now a days you can accomplish a lot of things in our hobby of knife collecting/buying/selling. BUT there is nothing that will replace the opportunity to be able to enjoy the times that can be spent with the friends that are involved in this business.
In my opinion this is the one thing that will keep knife shows alive.
Yeah it costs a helluva lot more to travel to shows and buy knives, but it costs money to do just about anything in this world that is worth while.
Here is a list of award winners at the show
Harvey Dean - best fixed blade
Bill Ruple - best folder and best of show
Best Display was Claude Eddy with his CASE 88 patterns
Best antique knife was won with a 5291 J pattern case.

I would be really grateful if someone could give a summary of the John Fitch sharpening demo/lecture.

What stone(s)? What lubricant? What technique? etc.

Thanks,

John

14 bottles??!!? Holy schmoly! How the heck do you maintain that much blade speed over such a looooong cut??

Roger

I had a great time!! As always, good times with good friends, and was fortunate enough to sell everything I brought. ( took a few orders too). That makes for a very fun show. Like Chris said, it is the time spent witht he prople who are there that makes this show special to me. It is just the right size to get to see everyone and spend a little time catching up. After 8 years, I think this was the best for me so far. Can't wait till next year!!

Thanks Chris and Nichelle!! Love you two!!

As John said he uses a flat grind on his blades and then convexs the edge on a micron belt. When he goes to resharpen he uses a diamond stone, not the kind with the holes in it but the smooth metal looking one. I can't remember the name of it.After sharpening on the stone he strops it on his hand but it may be better for others to use a smooth stone or piece of leather.

The comparatively less attractive participants are Crowell, Fitch and Barker (like y'all needed to be told).

As usual it was a great time. Diane and I really enjoy seeing our friends and meeting new ones. Chris and Nichelle, thank you for making it a very nice weekend, you all do a great job. Nichelle thank you for the funky monkey it is sure to be a lot of fun at work. Again you two do a wonderful job.
Paul, it was nice to meet you and thank you for the kind words about the bowie. I thought it turned out nicely myself, wish I had had two more like it there.
Diane and I are looking forward to next year.
Thank you Chris and Nichelle

Grea pictures!

Man, John Fitch is sure a big guy.......................no wonder he can cut through stuff.

Didn't Fitch star in that tv series "Bonanza" as Hoss Cartwright? :D

He only looks big in pictures. In real life he's freakin' huge! I gotta say that he displays a John Daly-esque shoulder turn on that bazillion bottle cut. Yikes! I would not like to be on the wrong end of a right hook...

Fortunatley, he's one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet.
