Chain off 2011

pedigree is not a bad brand - i stay away from real cheap stuff like at wall mart generic brand - the mid priced are ok -- as for as wet or dry that is a personal preference and dog preference - i feed mine dry food and i add grated meat to it - they sell a dog food roll that looks like salami and i use a cheese grater and put some of that with the dry it has extra vitamins in it - i hope that helps

somebody clue me in - is pedigree a decent daily dog food or do they need the dry kind?
Pedigree is ok, but you could do better...like nutro or iams. It is important that the first main ingredient be meat (whatever kind) and not meat by product or corn in the first 5 ingredients. Dogs have a harder time digesting corn and it is one of the leading causes of skin allergies in dogs. Canned food is not good as a sole diet, it can cause teeth problems due to increased chances of tartar and decay. One should use a dry food as daily fare and supplement it with canned food. It is important not to just switch your dogs food ( one to the other, wet or dry) but to gradually switch from one to the other over a week or so by mixing the old food with the new food to avoid shocking their system and causing diarrhea.
Your dog may be stubborn and not like the change, in that case you can give him a day or two to get hungry enough to try it (not much more) or try another food or go back to the one used previously. Some dogs can take a few weeks to get used to the new food, dont be nervous, as long as he's eating some of it, he will be ok.

nutro is a bit high priced but - 'nutro' 'iams' or 'science diet' are the high end stuff - i use those but i look for the sale and i mix a 40 lb bag of science diet or iams with a 40 lb bag of 'bentiful weight control' or pedigree

i usually use half and half expensive and mid priced on sale - 3 dogs can get expensive - and i always buy the low calorie or weight control stuff

good advice Karda has with switching food brands i always do it gradually to prevent them getting the runs

some people add a little canned food to the dry but i use the salami style rolls of meat grated instead of canned because it last longer and has less or no preservatives depending on the brand

Science diet has been proven to be not as good as nutro or iams, as it contains more by products and filler than meat. Read the ingredients listed and you will see what i mean.
By using the higher quality and therefore more expensive brands your dog will be able to eat less of the food to fill his stomach and provide the needed beneficial nutrients. In the long run it actually pays to give your best friend the best food available because they are more healthy and less prone to skin or fur problems and other maladies and are generally more healthy to boot. Which in turn saves you money by decreasing the amount of time and money spent at the veteranarian.

I used to feed my dog dry dogfood, liberally laced with table scraps and bones. His diet was probably 50% cheap dry dogfood, and 50% leftover human food. He lived a long and healthy life, despite various people saying I shouldn't feed him this or that.

I think the variety was probably good for him, and if nothing else he really had a good time eating the people food and bones.

i hear ya Karda - for me it depends on my wallet at the time

i hear you Howard my dogs get scraps but i have to be careful whcih stuff i give em with Jake getting a weight problem
