Seriously considering this challenge. What would be a better buy mini grip 556-1 or zt 0450cf?

I'd go with a Small Micarta Insingo from CRK. I could easily carry this knife and this knife only for the rest of my days (thankfully I don't have to, though :)).

It's got a cult following for a reason. Best EDC knife on earth, in my eyes. Small and unimposing enough for the office, rugged enough for yard work and camping, perfect blade shape for any EDC task, and as comfortable in the hand as any knife I own.

Challenge 2, Day 17

This thread isn't getting much love anymore. How is everyone else's challenges going?

I'm in. I'm going to carry a new Benchmade 940-2. I'v been carrying a Benchmade 5400 in 154cm for the past 2 years and have never carried s30v.

Quite a size difference. The 5400 weights in at 4.63oz while the 940-2 only weights 2.65oz. Both have 3.4" blades. The 5400 is quite a bit beefier.

Excited to see how s30v holds up compared to the trusty 154cm.

Challenge 1, Day 1

Didn't see much use today

Cut plastic from about 10 cases of mason jars

Afterwords noticed 2-3" threads hanging off new sweater. Held the threads against the blade w/ my thumb and made the slightest cut motion and they both came off cleanly and effortlessly without pulling any more of the thread.

I may start this tomorrow as it just happens to be NKD: a small sebenza 21, as plain as can be, has been waiting for me at the office since yesterday (I've been on vacation - never wanted to get back to work so badly!)

Short backstory: I had some gift certificate money at Blade HQ coupled with exactly enough remaining on a Visa gift card I had forgotten about to make $350. I had been considering doing something roughly equivalent to this challenge as I had decided that I'd bought too many new knives recently. I figured that I might as well get one more that I thought I would REALLY like and see how long I could stay happy with just that knife. I definitely don't need something built to the quality of a CRK for how I use something that I carry day in, day out but I really like to respect what I'm carrying. Aside from good looks and adequate functionality, one of the main attributes I seek in a knife is ease of carry - I like to be able to forget that it's in my pocket. I've been mostly carrying a Benchmade 943, a Boker Plus urban trapper (can a knife get any thinner and lighter? if so, please tell me!) and a Mcusta tactility.

GatorMedic, how are you liking the Spider Monkey? I was seriously considering that very model that you have and was super bummed that BladeHQ didn't have it in stock.

Considering I am a younger participator here on the forums, I can only afford to have one really nice knife at a time haha. So this challenge should be a piece of cake for me, and right now I have been carrying my ZT 0560BW I just recently picked up.

I really like it. It's officially my new off duty knife, which will continue past this challenge. I love the blade length as 3.25" is my preferred EDC size. It feels good in the hand, and the ridges on the end of the handle facilitate a good grip when your pulling it out of pocket. I'm not normally a fan of carbon fiber, but it actually doesn't bother me on this knife. It cuts well, and I haven't had to sharpen it yet. The only thing I don't like about the knife is the pocket clip. It is insanely tight so I have to use two hands to clip it back into my pocket right now, and it's guaranteed to start shredding the edge of my pants pocket. I've tried to bend it to open it slightly off the scale, but it hasn't worked at all. Hopefully it loosens up over time.

I thought the clip was the worst-looking part of the knife when I was browsing - kind of stubby and not at all in harmony with the lines and angles in the rest of the presentation. Pity. Looks like standard Torx hardware, tightness adjustment should be a 5 minute job.

In other news, Day 1 with the small Sebenza complete with absolutely zero urges to buy anything new... except a large Sebenza.

Challenge 1, Day 3

Security camera repair

Knife is still very sharp btw. This was not a slice but a light push.

Well . . .
. . . I pretty much failed at my first attempt to carry the same knife for a month.
I started out with G_L_O_R_I_A (the highly modded Cold Steel Pendleton in 3V; top in photo). Then got obsessed with getting the same thing with a bit smaller handle. Had to have the better steel so went with 3V in the Mini Pendleton.

The !$#%^#^$& sheath kept dulling the blade though, even after I modded THAT!
. . . I just got fed up farting around. That and I learned I am not that into a fixed . . . for everything . . . because I have to wash it too often. Use it at work then want it clean for at home.

So all I can say is :

Knoyfe ? ? ? That's not a Knoyfe.
THIS
is a Knoyfe !

Finally I just grabbed : A REAL KNIFE . . . the Ritter Grip in M390.
FINALLY I could just relax !

Thank YOU KnifeWorks for your EXCLUSIVES !
As the song says "You're getting to be a habit with me".

What I mean by washing too much is
A folder does not slip into a sheath so if the blade is dirty all I need to wash is the blade, not a sheath too (inside and out), and I am good when I get home. How ever with a fixed blade if I don't wash the sheath immaculately then as soon as I slip the blade back in the sheath with trash juice in it . . . well you get the picture.

AND I know, especially with THIS wonder knife / blade steel, . . . I KNOW the edge is going to be sharp when I go to cut something.
Just today at work, after not carrying this knife for a couple three months, I popped it open to slit a plastic product package open with the tip of the knife. Last time I tried that with the other super magical be all end all extra mother super steel it failed to do the job and just bunched up the plastic and whined.
The Ritter Grip in M390 just slit the package open. Easily. Without fuss.
There
Was that so difficult ?

Perhaps tomorrow the big brother of the Grip may show up, tracking says it is in Denver, and I think I will finally have a knife worthy of a full, one month, do it all, run.

Oh Yah BABY !
Can't wait !

Either that or I will just grab my Case Trapper in Stag. I know that blade is long enough and able to keep cutting to boot.

PS: yah . . . I said long enough. I learned that for a do it all I need about four inches.

And here it is ! ! !

I call "home" M390. If it is like the Griptillian for edge durability and edge feel in the cut I'm going to be enjoying the next four weeks.

I'm not saying this blade won't see some time on my new Norton 3X grinding wheel (haven't got it yet) but with this Benchmade 710 Knifeworks Exclusinve M390 I can just relax and use it. I don't even have to sharpen it. Plenty sharp out of the box. I do look forward to polishing the bevel but it cuts like I want it to for the most part already so . . .

One Month EDC here we come !

(again) (no really . . . for sure this time . . .) :o (I feel it . . .) ;)

Cant wait to see how you like the m390. m390 is very high on my list of steels to try.

I have one blade in m390. A BM LE 730-1501

that I really don't want to abuse because shes so damn pretty.

Funny thing is that I was going to get a doug ritter mini grip or the 710-1401 to test the m390. Looks like Ill live vicariously through you for a month :D
Also high on the list to test are m4, c20v, s90v, and s35vn. Think I'll test a different steel each month.

Challenge 1, Day 4

After 4 days of daily use I can tell cpm-s30v is far superior to 154cm in edge retention. It hasn't seen heavy abuse by any means but after what Iv done to this cpm-s30v blade in the past few days as compared to 154cm, the 154cm would need touching up by now. I have no desire to touch up the cpm-s30v yet. Still shaves arm hair just fine.
