I like forward-facing edges. Tantos, sheepsfoot, and wharncliffe profiles are about 9/10 of my fixed blades, with one clip point, one drop point, and an assortment of daggers.

I like Kydex sheaths. All of my knives have excellent cost:material ratios. I have no need of choppers, but I do like knives with broad utility applications. All of them are under 7" in blade length for the sake of reasonable carry and maneuverability.

So, is there a Busse out there for me?

Or a Hog MUK

Not my photos, if you want me to remove your photo, shoot me a pm.

Yep, was just going to add this photo for reference.

Okay, so, unsurprisingly, the price seems a bit out of line to me. These are $400 as best as I can tell. For that much, I can have a knife made to my specifications and have a sheath made for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Wharncliffe that popped up in O2W.
Check the Busse sub on Wednesdays to see what is dropping.

Probably should just do that. I carry a custom fixed blade regularly.

+1 custom route is the best bet IMHO just because you can fine tune YOUR knife with a maker vs one size fits all . Busses have their place IMHO but without a need for chopping and for genreal utility and blade shape I think the custom route is the best route .

Yep, especially if you are comfortable in spending over $300, you can get quite the knife dialed right in for Your usage and preferences.

It seems to be as I feared - dang! I was really hoping there was one out there for me that fit my kinda picky material:cost requirements. I might seek one of those hooked wharnies out anyway, just because it really is quite a handsome blade shape that would actually be useful for me. I certainly haven't seen that specific shape (really really really stretched-out hawkbill) before, either, outside of a handful of slipjoints.

Don't forget that Busse has an unconditional warranty. That alone is worth a few extra bones, IMO.

I say get a Busse. It has the potential to hold its resale value better than a custom (depending on the maker) if you find that you don't like it, you're getting a proprietary steel (Infi), and did I mention the warranty?:D

The warranty doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot to me in this instance (not needing them as choppers) like it would with a folder - the relative simplicity and robustness of fixed blades is why I picked up a Microtech Crosshair just recently. No centering, lockup, or pivot issues to be had, so I'll never have to deal with their crap customer service!

The blade shape and steel might be what pushes me over the edge on then regardless - now I just need to find one of those for the $150 I'd be comfortable spending on it :D

You can buy one that you like the handle of (material and color) and send it out for a regrind.

I have seen them warranty a knife that was shot at Multiple times.
They fulfilled the warranty After they found the video of the guy shooting it on Youtube. They didn't say that they wouldn't continue to warranty the knife, but sent back a snarky letter stating that she (the knife) didn't like being tickled and would appreciate it if he just went back to batonning her like a good girl.

That is paraphrasing, but I am not off by much. I would be willing to bet that if the work was done seemingly professionally (like Josh from Razor Edge Knives), they would still cover it.

It has always blown my mind that people shell out $400+ for choppers or other large fixed blades with the intention of using it as a tool to cut/baton/process wood. What the hell is the point? Seems highly idiotic to me.

You know what I use that is a billion times more efficient and costs the same or less than what some spend on these blades? A CHAINSAW!

These idiots would get through one tree by the time I could clear the entire forest.

Who would carry a chainsaw on a 3+ day hike, how about carrying a 5+ pound splitting maul?
Oh yea, an idiot...

So why not carry a larger knife that can withstand the usage/abuse?

Thanks for your input but the OP said specifically that he Did Not need a chopper.

Let me know how that 12 mile hike with your chainsaw goes.. oh yeah,, you'll also be carrying a splitting maul right?? So your up to 30-40 lbs of gear right there??
Why come on a knife forum to tell people why they shouldn't get a knife?
You don't understand why someone would spend 400 dollars? Great, then don't do it, but don't come here calling people idiots.

Although you're not likely to find a Busse in that price range, you could grab a Scrapyard 511, Skinner, Mudd mutt,, all great knives in SR101, and also carry the lifetime unconditional warranty.
Scrapyard also has the res-c handles,, which seems like you already like the rubber handles.. also they have had knives in Elmax if thats your flavor,, good luck!

Oh yeah,, also Swamprat is also a great option,, same SR101, life time warranty,, and great ergos,, they are available off the site right now.
I'd say grab a Ratmandu while you can,, great knife for the money.

Cheers

I like the chain saw route myself. I am considering a large handmade fixed blade that is basically a chopper in the price range you speak. But I know that I won't use it much. It is just another toy for me. ... and that is how I justify the expense.

So, in relation to this thread, if you want a Busse, get a Busse. Pay the price and live with it.

Don't forget lugging gas with. Good for getting stubborn fires going as well.
