Changes that you'd like to see from the large manufacturers of folding knives?

I disagree completely I don't care much for deep carry clips I find them more difficult to pull out of my pocket. I never understood everyone's obsession with people not seeing their knives clipped to their pockets. I've been carrying knives for years and no one has ever bothered me or even said anything to me. Even if someone did say something to you as long as your obeying the law there isn't going to be any problem.

Dear Sog,

You haven't produced anything that I would consider buying in a very, very long time. The plastic handles on the trident folder I owned were flexible. Not good. You used to make pretty decent stuff back with the old school fixed blades, you need to get back to your roots instead of trying to keep up with all the gimmicky fads.

Cold Steel- About 75% of your product line is an absolute joke. Are you a purveyor of all things mall ninja with a few decent knives or would you really like to be taken seriously in the cutlery industry? Kudos on reinventing the lock back to your liking, and stepping up to a mid grade steel on some offerings, but I'd like to see you dump the cheap toys and while probably unrealistic, consider an American factory for your production before I'll ever consider buying again.

Microtech- Do you really put glass breakers on every single double action OTF model? While I understand it may be a viable option for some I think that there should be another option to leave off the glass breaker for the rest. I can break glass with many objects, but I don't need every MT to have to be set up for this rare emergency. Also your customer service/warranty department is seriously lacking.

Emerson- Chisel grinds, chisel grinds everywhere I see. While I realize that you do have a couple sweet models that are V-ground chisels are extremely prevalent in your products, right down to the edges, even on the customs. More options with out the wave feature would also be nice. All users don't necessarily like this feature in almost every knife model. Waves and chisel grinds are very polarizing features in my opinion. More options for these would be nice.

ZT- Pretty solid product line with lots of options. I would like to see you guys pay to re-open your forum here so all the ZT fans can have a home for their numerous picture threads and where we can all talk about things like how do we define "hard use" actually?

Strider- Prices...Sorry but I am not paying full price for para cord on your fixed blade handles, slap some G-10 on those sharpened pry bars! Also, 6 bills now for a GG SMF because you slapped cerakote on some stainless steel? I understand coating 3V or PD1 and I love the color options but damn, we're venturing into custom prices for something that is kind of a non-issue.

Hinderer- While the slicer grind will always be my favorite, nice job on coming out with more blade shapes and lower pricing. Interchangeable hardware is sweet and I love the reversible pocket clip and liner behind the G-10 side. My only issue is that your flippers don't flip well. When I last owned an XM-18 street prices were like $700 and up, and your flippers were out-flipped by a ZT at like half the cost so I sold both of mine. Now that the prices are more reasonable this issue could be more forgivable.

Chris Reeve- I love the precision and attention to detail. The only thing I don't like is blasted titanium. I can't say I would change anything though, as stone washing the titanium might make it too shiny and coating titanium is unnecessary. Perhaps a few flavors of subtle anodizing would brighten it up a bit. I like the carbon fiber option but I just haven't decided to pull the trigger yet. Keep doing what you do, you are certainly leading the industry in a lot of areas.

I think that covers most of the large manufacturers that I am familiar with. For companies like Case and Buck that I left out, I don't much deal with traditional knives so I will leave that for others to comment on. For guys like gerber and smith and wesson, stop slapping your name on every piece of junk that lands on your desk. Have some self respect.

Generally speaking, if a company produces fixed blades they should come with a decent sheath. If your folder is so large or heavy that is is unfit for a pocket it should come with a MOLLE pouch. The price of SWAG from some companies is ridiculous. If you would like me to place a sticker from your company somewhere, or wear one of your T-shirts throw a sticker in the box, and make your shirt prices reasonable. It's inexpensive advertising paid for by your fans. Maybe some of these large companies raking in all this money could do a little more to support knife rights as well. We have some places in this country with some really terrible knife laws. Perhaps these companies would benefit themselves as well as the customers by investing in some knife rights initiatives. If we all don't stay on top of this it's only going to get more difficult to carry the tools as we see fit.

Of course, these are only my personal opinions and preferences and were not intended to upset any fans of any particular brand. I think any company has room for improvement even if it is just for better customer service or more competitive prices. More options, better quality and competitive pricing can only help the knife community as a whole. Sorry for the giant wall of text.

I'd like to see limited edition knives to have a 1 knife per customer limit, so its not so difficult to get one without the exorbitant secondary market prices.

Black clips that aren't just painted, and wear off quickly. You put cerakote or dlc on the blade, why not on the clip?

Better ratio of price to quality (talking about you Benchmade!).

Less S30V.

No more single screw clips

In so called "hard use" knives, I'd like to see more tool and carbon steel and less stainless.

More blades closer to the 3" range. I'm tired of seeing otherwise beautiful looking knives that have 4 inch blades and weigh over 7 ounces.

All this thread really shows is that you will never please everyone. And I don't say that in a dismissive, or condescending way. It should be an eye-opener for the knife companies because for every design/material/size choice they make, there'll be folks who say "I hate it, change it to be this other way instead!". Of course, there'll be just as many folks who are like "Yeah, we love this, do more of this!"

Interesting, to be sure.

I'm of the mindset that deep carry clips are asinine and ridiculous. I don't get the point of them. People know what a knife clip looks like, they don't have to see the whole friggen knife to know what it is.

I would like to see more creative blade shapes. Too many spear/drop point.

Just my .02

This is also what I was thinking reading through this thread. You can never get the perfect knife from a production company because they are producing knives that appeal to as many people as possible not each individual. And most of those people (like 95%) are not "knife people" on forums. That is what customs are for.

I wish makers would stop doing all sorts of etched designs, slogans, etc. on the blades. I like a plain, polished blade. Also, get rid of the black blades and all of the knife designs that look like something out of a techno horror show.

More knives with wood scales. I'm a sucker for wood on any knife.

Less blade etchings. There are some very cool knives out there that are ruined with huge crazy looking etchings and logos all over the blade. Sure I could sand them off or remove them another way, but I shouldn't have to. And if the blade also has a coating then you can't just sand off the logo.

Tacticool black is one thing, zombie green? Heck no.

In addition to that though, I'd like to see some more NICE looking colors on more knives. Like teal and more normal greens.

More carbon steel both folders and fixed blades. I understand the love of super steels, but I'd rather something I can easily sharpen that grows a nice patina, at least as an option for knives to come with.

Lastly I'd like to see more traditional/modern crossovers. Cold Steel did very well with the Lone Star and Mackinac Hunters, and I think mixing the styles and designs of new and old turns out looking very good.

I do realize that most of my requests are readily accessible in the custom market.

Ball bearing pivots have proven themselves cheap and significantly better, yet many companies only have them on $150+ folders.

Ball bearings do everything that well-designed washer pivots do, there's no need to make up broad statements...

Ps, Kershaw has a few KVT folders that price under $50...

Yup, the smoothest knives I own are not the ones with bearings. Don't get me wrong, I like bearings but people shouldn't just make stuff up.

Cough cough Strobe cough. Sorry, the air-handlers in the office need to be cleaned. :D

Not so much black plastic. C'mon guys, the 1990s are over.

Fewer liner locks and frame locks. More lockbacks, midlocks, lift locks, whatever.

More natural handle material choices.

Enough with the pocket clips already. It's not exactly a secret that the primary function of pocket clips is to make knives easier to lose, thereby increasing sales.

Every knife should have a lanyard hole or bail.

All folding knife designers should memorize this slogan, "Thin blades cut better." An internship at Opinel should be mandatory.

:D

Heat treat the steel properly. I don't mind sharpening 8crMoV more often, but some companies just don't seem to care about consistent HT.

More wharncliffe/sheepsfoot blades.
