Review Charlie Mike Elmax blade

Yeah , I'd opt
In all candor, this was my perspective too. But Matt was super helpful in customizing every other aspect of this blade, getting the steel, handle, exact specs, and profile I wanted. Everything about this design was perfect and I wasn't able to get it exactly like this anywhere else, so I decided to try something new and keep an open mind on the chisel grind. I haven't had it long enough to say I like/dislike the grind, but either way, this is an extremely sharp blade that is second to none in cutting performance. I ran the usual battery of sharpness tests, it does every bit as well as my Bradford G4 did, up to and including that it will clean slice Rizla green cigarette paper. Anybody that thinks chisel grinds can't be scary sharp, needs to try a CM blade.
What will be your main use/purpose for this sweet new blade of yours? Will you be EDCing it?

I've got 2 CMFTW knives that I carry all the time and elmax is my favorite stainless steel AND I've got a few new designs I've drawn up. Looks like he's gonna be getting some more of my hard-earned money here soon lol.

I hadn't remembered seeing a CMFTW in Elmax before, is it a new material for you Matt?

I've made 3-4 knives in Elmax. People don't ask for it much. Probably got burned out from previous experience with ZT?

For the love of God Matt, a new maker's mark (your knives deserve it)

LOL, never!

  • EDC (it will join these other small FB's pictured below that I rotate)
  • Home stuff: food prep, boxes, working outside
  • Backpacking and camping
  • Occasional covert tactical operations

Cool knife, still curious how a chesel grimd would sharpen up. Is a single edge easier to sharpen?

Single (secondary) bevel gets sharpened. Unground side gets stropped.

That one covers it.

My reasons are this... Everyone does V grind. If someone wants a chisel, they come to me. Doing so keeps my orders down. I would no longer be able to keep my turnaround to under a month if I offered V grind. This keeps my work load manageable.

An update: ran a little experiment sharpening the elmax yesterday. Reprofiled and lowered edge angle to 30 degrees inclusive. Used SiC for the edge, only used diamond compound on hardwood to strop the wire edge burr off the flat side (did not strop the edge). I normally use all diamonds on steels like this for best results, but based on another thread where Ankerson got great results using SiC, wanted to try this and see how well it could do. This gave a pretty good edge, more than adequate for my use. Would shave arm hair, clean slice newsprint and receipt paper, whittle a curl on receipt paper surface, and clean-slice Rizla green cigarette paper lengthwise (but not cross-wise). This is good performance considering sharpened edge without diamonds, and fairly thick blade stock. I'd bet using diamonds I could get this edge sharper, too.

Only downside: while sharpening I scratched the blade a bit, and there's some feathering at the shoulder. So I've already reduced the cosmetic perfection of the new blade. :-) But hey, at least now it's mine for real, and that's OK since this is a user. And it's good to confirm the Elmax takes a great edge.
