Master of Double Posts!!! I'm taking on students now...
Heat treating - you will probably be best off with manufacturers charts... I try to find the maker of the actual steel and see what they think. Then try to find half a dozen more and note the differences, etc. You'll see lots of other info but stick with the manufacturers sites, not smithing sites, etc..
For example - If I'm using Bohler-Uddleholm D2 (bucorp) I'll find their charts and cross compare to others.... their D2 is just a hair different than other D2's so I want to know what's up
Here's the D2 info I'd use - (pdf)

Great info -

For simple steels and some tool steels (whatever info he has is dependable) Kevin Cashen has the best info for me -
http://www.cashenblades.com/steel/
Great Books - ASM Handbook, The Master Bladesmith by Jim Hrisoulas... there are a bunch but those are dependable
Don't use the heat treating info in the $50 knife book by Goddard or in "Step by Step" Knifemaking by David Boye... both are great books but I find some of the info a bit dated or just total BS...
I have thoughts on heat treating too...
Daniel! Do you have a fav EDC? I bet you rotate like crazy!!
Good question! I really have too many to choose from
Most use - Either my old-school Ti Backpacker or cord wrapped Legal EDC... I'm keeping a new Backpacker that will get more carry than either.
My Keychain tool is a another well used EDC.
The top knife I have is a SAK my Grandfather bought me when I was about 10 years old... I recently cleaned it and soaked in Ballistol, it is better than new! Low monetary value but it's a keepsake.
My Dad has a early to mid 1960's Case that is one of the coolest knives ever... huge folder with a lanyard hole... he carried it everywhere in Vietnam and still has the original cord on the lanyard.
I'm keeping one of the folders too, it will be used a ton! It will be my new EDC.
When I started making knives I said I wouldn't buy one until I made a folder! I have an Opinel #8 that slipped by the rules but that's it! My last purchase besides that was a trade, I found a bunch of nice agate and traded it for a dinosaur bone scaled Case Peanut made by a friend of mine.
