Just a public service announcement for the other noobs out there. Do yourself a favor and buy good abrasives. I had a bunch of cheap stuff I finally finished off so i ordered some Norton Black Ice. The difference is incredible. I am kicking myself now for having spent 10x longer hand sanding then I should have. Carry on.

This x 1000. I have ordered cheap paper and after 2 passes its smooth. Not worth the time it took to order it.

seriously. After getting through a 220 finish in 15 minutes instead of an hour and a half, I actually almost cried.

I went through same thing trying to save money. One thing that really helps is getting as clean as you can on the grinder first, saves so much time on hand rubbing.

Same for me.

And I keep thinking I should use the cheap paper for something.

It just feels bad to throw it away. I pray for someone to get rid of the cheap stuff when I'm at work or something.

I was just amazed there even could be such difference between papers.

Yes, I would have bought better stuff, but like currenthill, I just felt I should use up the garbage as I didn't want to waste it.

I have a huge roll of klingspor 220grit jflex that's 4" wide. Got it from a surplus shop in Utah. I will cry when I have used it all. And hope I can find another roll. I can go from a gator A300-A100 grit finish to a hand rubbed 220grit in a matter of minutes. Then a few more min with 400grit paper and presto. Life is to short for crappy paper

But that is like saying that dog poop stinks less than cat poop. ;) But seriously ladies and germs, the stuff that they sell at HD and Lowes is for wood and it is barely adequate for that purpose.
I actually prefer the 3m pro grade precision from HD it outlasted the Norton pro sand by a long shot

do you all like rhynowet or black ice better?

I've tried both and prefer Rhynowet myself. It's used on my disc grinder and for hand sanding. In both applications, it seems to cut just that little bit longer in the low grits than black ice did for me.

Hahaha well I'll have to pony for some big boy sand paper one day huh? I'm still looking for the PSA that Nick uses in his video that isn't square

How do these compare to 3M imperial wet to dry? I've noticed the 3M sheets I get from the auto parts store lasts about 3 times as long as the hardware store brands.
