Cheap Choppers?

Why not get a browning Crowell/Barker competition knife. I got mine for right around $100. It came with a super sharp convex edge and a nice leather sheath. I totally love mine, well worth the money and it looks alot classier than say a BK9.

What about a Cold Steel Kukri Machete? Much better than a Tramontina machete :) .

I've heard of Marble's knives, but don't have any experience with them. I, too, would like to hear more. Time for some research!

Since the government won't subsidize my knife needs ;):D with a blade stimulus package, I can't afford a Busse Fusion Battle Mistress. I know, cry me a river.
So in the same vein as our cheap knife thread, who wants/has/needs cheap choppers. I'm talking big knives with a little price tag. What's out there?

I'm looking at the Becker BK9, and wishing they'd bring back the Brute.

Spec Plus Marine Raider. I've beat the absolute crap out of mine and it still works just fine.

Stuff I use and recommend:

HI khukuries (especially BLEMS)

Ranger RD serie. I have the old RD, but Ontario makes good stuff. The RD6 is surprising for it's size, so the RD9 should be a hell of a chopper.

As an experiment I just picked up a Kukhri house brand "baby" Kukhri from Lorien at Bladeworks.
Its just a little under 10.5 inches overall length.
Roughly the same size as my Becker Companion Bk-2, but only 2/3rds the weight of the Becker.
Becker 12 ounces, Kukhri 8 ounces.
The Kukhri is 6/16ths thick! (the Becker almost 4/16ths)
Becker is more ergonomic for sure but they both seem fairly equal for chopping.
The Kukhri steel seems just a little less durable than the Beckers, but not by too much. The KH is as easy to sharpen as the Becker.
Might have to reduce some of the flared end of the Kukhri handle though at least on the top, that will allow me to comfortably grip it farther back for chopping.
But other than that i really like it!
Might look into getting a full sized KH Kukhri.

Since you are looking at the Battlemistress then I would suggest getting a big knife replacement. Lets face it, if you get a machete you will always be wondering what a big knife is like. So get a big knife and then wonder what a machete, khukri or axe is like :D

Ranger RD-9
Kabar Heavy Bowie
There is an equivalent big bowie by Ontario Spec Ops that I can't remember
Becker Bk-9
Browning Crowell competition knife
Kershaw outcast
Scrapyard SOD or Dogfather - more expensive but better choppers

mymindisamob - +1 on the KaBar Large Heavy Bowie. I've got a new one that I'm never going to use. If you're hurtin on cash, I could send it to you to try out. If you like it, you can keep it. Email me at DunnzoBrah@live.com if you're interested. I only ask that you post some using pics when you get it!

I got to disagree about the Ranger RD series being decent choppers. My RD6 hurt my hand very badly when chopping down small sapling/trees, etc.

What about the Kershaw Outcast? I'm surprised no one mentioned it yet..

A big +1 on that

Try holding the knife by the handle instead of the blade next time :D :D :D

Kidding of course. The RD-9 has a compact handle. For me I really like the feel of it and I love that it is made of mircata. I've used it chopping all kinds of things without the discomfort reported above. I find my RC-6 handle more comfortable. I don't like the BK-9 handle much as I find it too thick. I love my 'survival wrap' handle on my BK-7 which involved getting rid of the scales and wrapping the tang with paracord but thickening up the sides by adding a fire kit inside the wrapping. Handles are pretty individualistic things I think.

+1 for the HI Khukuri (I own several and am impressed w/ each one), or the Condor machete if it's mainly just brush clearing.

Just to add the CAK is my favourite chopper.

If your talking cheep but affective take a look at these...
