Cheap knives that continue to beat out more expensive knives for pocket time.

I bought a schrade usa 34OT stockman for $10 bucks to have as a whittler, but dang it, dont those three blades come in handy for different edc tasks.

For me its my Kershaw storm 2 , i originally bought it because i had just sold my edc knife ( Spyderco Paramilitary ) and needed something for in the pocket. I've used it for just about everything and its never let me down.

Is there a micra size model leatherman with a phillips and a flathead?

I use my Opinel #9 in a similar fashion. The little Micra gets rid of the need for carrying a bigger, heavier and more expensive multi-tool for most EDC tasks. Combined, I can take on most things I encounter.

Hey C_K, glad you are enjoying the Shallot. I carry my ZT 0560 every day, everywhere, but since I was gifted an Opinel #8 it does most of the work. Its thinner blade slices plastic and cardboard better than the ZT. The ZT is still there in case I need something more stout but the Opi handles most of my needs at work.

At ~ $30 from a WallyWorld on a Sunday evening, when proper knife-stores are closed, a US-made Buck 110 is a tough act to follow. It's one heck of a user knife anytime!

CC,

The Micra IS a Leatherman! And it DOES have both a Phillips and 2 flathead drivers on it.

The Phillips driver is a 2 pronged blade. You can see it on my picture between the cap lifter and the tweezers. It works fine on most day to day things like covers on electronics or electrical face plates and the like. It obviously isn't for heavy torque situations.

The large flathead driver is next to the knife blade. Again, suitable for most day to day things but not for heavy torque. And, best of all, the top of the cap lifter is a tiny flathead, suitable for things like eyeglasses and small stuff like that. Super handy.

Now, if by "Leatherman" you mean something with a pliers head, instead of the (amazingly good) scissor head on the Micra, then there is the Squirt PS4.

An alternative to this would be the Gerber Dime.

I carry a larger Leatherman in my backpack most days. I also find that the Micra carries in my pocket much better than my PS4. The PS4 goes on backpacking trips, where I need small pliers to drive a needle for field repairs. The Micra is my EDC pocket tool.

Hope this helps.

I've got a kissing crane medium (I think) brown mule that is pretty much the most general knife ever made, but has some character. Mostly due to the carbon steel that holds a good edge, wood scales that show just enough grain, and the steel/brass pivot is pretty much my favorite part, along with a nice comfy shape and a blade you can pinch open. It was one of my first knives since getting into the hobby, and I have used the hell out of it, probably carried it more than any other single knife except my scout knife. The build quality is only mediocre (warped blade that rubs the liners, end of the spring isn't flat at the butt, and the spring stands proud or recessed in just about every location, but it does cut like a demon. I think it was like $20 when I got it, highly recommended as a general user.

This stays in my pocket ever since I got it....inexpensive, very well built, and tough as nails.

I am sorry but can someone explain to me if this is a RAT 1 or a completely different manufacturer?

I am not familiar with these and I don't understand whay it says "everything the Rat 1 wanted to be". What does that mean in a sense of a model type? or these are completely two different manufacturers with also identical looking knives????????????

Thanks Pinnah! I'm going to order the micra. I was installing ram today for a coworker and could have used a Phillips. I ended up using the tip of a sodnuster to do the install! Looks like the scissors could supplant the knife too out in public in some cases.

A lot of the time lately my opinel No. 9 beats out a sebenza and PM2 for my edc... just something about it I find really appealing.

Both are designed by Randall's Adventure Training (RAT) and bear the name on the blade.

When I grab a cheap knife you really can't beat the cryo 2. That is such a great knife I am very impressed. Just sent the 801 in for some customizing so the cryo 2 will be alternating pocket time with a blur

Kershaw knockout or shallot for me. And maybe ill carry a really nice knife in its case just to show off.

I bought this as a cheap work knife.

Since then, it has completely replaced this as my primary EDC. I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out why I like it more.

I'm really surprised by the amount of people saying the shallot, I mean I love mine but like I said I'd never heard of it before it was gifted to me so I'm happy to see its well liked. I like its not-as-tall blade profile as alot of KAI's products and how thin it is, the only thing that would make it better was no recurve but since I don't cut with it, meaning it never needs sharpened, it doesn't bother me.

O4tg, what brand mags are those?

I have a couple of titanium lightweight knives I carry frequently.

1. Columbia River CRKT S-2, a poor man's Sebenza.

2. And I carry the Gerber Harsey Air Ranger. Both about the same size at about 3".
