Cheap PSK mirrors

I was at Micheal's today looking for christmas gifts, it's a craft store (not sure if they're regional or not). For a couple of bucks they have small packages of square (or round) mirrors of various sizes. Most would be highly suitable for a small survival kit. Cheap way to get something solid.

I've mentioned it before, but the throw-away makeup containers from your significant other is another good source.

Thanks for the pointer, Spooky. I've been looking for a couple small mirrors for my first aid kits for a while now. It never occurred to me to look in a hobby shop.

we have Michaels up here. My wife likes to go there. I guess I need to join her.

You should watch your local shopper-type paper, around here Hobby Lobby and Michaels both have 40% or 50% off coupons for a regular priced item almost every week.

Don't take away my man card, but I also signed up for the JoAnn Fabric flyers, and I get a 40% off coupon every two weeks. I used a bunch of them to buy fabric to make my own micarta...yeah that's it, micarta...no reason to turn in my man cart...micarta.

My wife had an old lipstick case with a small rectangular mirror that I snagged. It's just the perfect size to fit snugly lengthwise inside an altoids tin, up against the long front "wall". I don't envision using it as a signal mirror or anything, but I've found it's handy to have one around for getting crud out of my eyes. Seems I can't go a day in the spring without getting one of those little black gnats flying right into my eye. :grumpy:

Man purses, make-up mirrors, lipstick cases, flyers from JoAnn Fabrics, Hobby Lobby and Michaels are happy places?

What Would Nessie Say????

"We do not go into the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it."

Apparently we also go to sport our cute mirrors and man purses, try out our lisptick cases and see whether or not the adorable fabric we just "scored" with a JoAnn coupon clashes with the fall foliage.

I though this was the WS&S forum, not Ms. Bea's Home Economics Class.:D

Hey possum, yours is an excellent suggestion but make it a magnifying mirror. I carry one because I mostly hike by myself and, like you, there have been times I have had things get in my eye and the magnifying mirror makes it that much easier to see what's going on (or maybe it's because of my aging vision :o )

Very good! :D

But as I was thinking about your post, it occured to me that most of the things we make fun of, (in this vein) are actually self-reliance skills - cute mirrors to further our pro-active medical endeavours and survival signaling, adorable fabrics to make our own knife accessories, sewing machine bobbins to store fishing line. Hell, I crochet PSK pouches. BikerMike (and I and probably a lot of others) card weave -once again creating usable outdoor attire and containers.

What about basket making - considered by most 'woman's work'? If I understand correctly, brain tanning by native peoples was, traditionally, 'woman's work', as was food prep and storage. Also wild food foraging.

Don't misunderstand me, MBTull, I thought your post was very funny but it got me to thinking that, a lot of things, typically considered to be of the feminine persuasion, have much to offer the male survivor.

There's probably a lot more to be added, but I just woke up

BTW, has anybody tried lipstick as a fire starter? - chap stick works! :D

Doc, while I could not resist joking around, skills that are traditionally associated with females are critical wilderness skills. Cooking, cleaning, hygiene, medicine and self-care, sewing, etc. all play a role in a safe and comfortable wilderness experience.

My wife is an Ayurvedic nutritional counselor and has a degree in home economics. As you can imagine, she is a great wilderness companion and my go-to gal when I have questions about sewing, fabric, leather, food storage, food preparation, food combining, eating with the seasons, self-care and the like.

A large part of the the fun associated with wilderness trekking is making one's own gear. In all honesty, my wife will drag me into Michaels, Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's where I happily roam the aisles, looking for material to turn into sheaths, ditty bags, stuff sacks, string silencers for my bow, cordage, fire starting material and bandannas. I really drive her crazy when I buy stuff to use as airgun and archery targets.

I've heard of panty-hoses being used as a layer of insulation against the cold :p

Or should it be called manty-hose :D:D:D

Doc, i know that lipgloss liquid doesn't burn...it just gets hot and sticks to your bare feet like napalm...but it doesn't burn. :D:rolleyes:

thanks for the heads up spooky, i haven't been there in a while, i should get back there sometime...

Plus one on the coupons. I get something about every week at Michaels for 50% off. My best buy yet was a air brush for 50% off. When I get better I will pick up the compressor.

Hobby lobbys bandanna isle is awesome. Only place Ive ever got a blaze orange one to put in my kit. Have several colors too.. I always wanted some styrofoam heads to shoot at, but the cleanup would be crazy!

Leather, cordage, candles, fabric, tins, containers, cotton balls, sandpaper, glue, paints, canvas....Man what a cool place!!

I saw a small signal mirror at REI yesterday. I want to say it was 2x3 I am thinking that is perfect for my pack.

It was made by Cogman's (or something like that).
