Cheaper overbuilt knives

Are there any cheaper alternatives that share the same thick and chunky look and feel of these knife companies? Maybe a step bigger than a zero tolerance. I would like something either assist open or something that can easily one hand open. Would also like to look at fixed blades like this too but mostly interested in a folder right now.

Bigger than a ZT, overbuilt and not too expensive: sounds like Cold Steel could be what you're looking for. The XL Voyager or Recon 1, Spartan or Rajah. I've got an XL Talwar, those thumb plates work just like an Emerson wave. Fun knives.

The three folders I have (that I recall) with the thickest blades are: Boker Minos, Boker GTC Federal and DPx Gear HEST/F Milspec. Blade lengths are 3.1-3.25", blade thicknesses are 0.20" and they go for $150-$250.

Another vote for grayman Satu and Dua. Tank knives that aren't cheap but still incredibly reasonable for titanium mid tech knives. Much cheaper than the popular striders and sebenzas. So right there between them and ZTs

Benchmade 755 MPR is seriously overbuilt. Boker Plus Albatross is super chunky. Spyderco Techno. When you say overbuilt I assume you're talking thick blade stock, thicker handles that fill the hand. The aforementioned knives fit the bill.

How about a ZT 0300BW? I have one from a passaround that needs a good home. It's a big chunky knife and it's an assisted opener. Gov't job with lots of kids....been there. :)

You can see pictures of the knife at the link below. It's been through a few hands but it's in great shape...hardly looks used. You're welcome to it if you want it.

If you want something under 4", the Utilitac II or Cold Steel AK-47 are solid knives and won't break the bank (the Utilitac II will barely register at the bank). I'm looking at the Utilitac II tanto plain edge myself.

That's a very sleek and thin looking knife, though..

Here's a post I made awhile ago about some Schrade models. These are relatively "overbuilt", I suppose.

Smooth Titanium Handle Version.

Looks pretty good and sturdy. Anyone got any experience with them?

Also, it seems like they've introduced more models to their heavy "Stainless Frame lock" folder series;

In regards to blade thickness, there are very few production folders with 0.22-25ish" and more thickness. I'm not sure if there even are any outside of a couple of Extrema Ratio's and Medfords?

Pm sent. Let me know if you don't get the pm. Something's up with my tapatalk.

Thanks for that reply jac_solar. I have been eyeing one of those Schrade 301 folders. Looks like a decent knife. I am carrying a schf14 in my pocket right now.

When I say a step bigger than zt I don't necessarily mean blade length. I have liked the Xl recon from cold steel but right now can't legally carry it. I will post some pics of the knife designs I am more after when I get in front of a computer.

Camillus are great knives they use good steal as well... Some Walmarts started carrying them I got the Camillus Beast from there for $80 on the Camillus website it was $120 so defiantly shop around and they have GREAT customer service my pivot screw striped when I took it apart to clean it I called em up and they sent me a whole new set of screws for handle and pivot no questions and free of charge in my opinion you can't beat a company with good customer service and good products

This is more what I am talking about. Of course this is a REALLY expensive knife. Anyone who hasn't seen these before may be like me and become immediately in love with these knives.

That's pretty cool of you Morrow. Not everyday you get offered something like that.

Cold Steel Voyager series, though not fancy, is hard to beat on value. I've also come to think of the Rat 1 as over built, because I ruined one trying to mod it and it was just crazy hard to get to fail.

Brandon,

I put the ZT 0300BW in the mail about 30 minutes ago. You should have it on Saturday. Enjoy it!

Faith in humanity restored. At least for a little while anyway.

OP, you're gonna love it.

Have you guys seen the Nutnfancy Hest video? He batoned with it, maybe 8 or 9 wacks in total and the soft Ti lockbar warped and the knife now has bladeplay. I know I wouldn't baton with a Hest but still....
