Cheapest S30V knife?

I know it's the Sage 2, "3" was just a typo as can be seen from me writing "Sage 2" everywhere else and the link going to Sage 2's.

Not according to google products search. Please link me to where you can buy Benchmade 635s for less than $163

A knife being a little bit more than another knife is not "the same price". These are all cheap prices for s30v with titanium handles btw, most knives in this configuration are well over $200. But I asked you to find me one cheaper than the Sage 2, you have not done that. The Sage 2 can now be officially known as the cheapest s30v titanium handle knife available.

You keep pulling stuff out of your butt and claiming it as fact. Where is your market research (see below) on these knives? How much profit is made on $200+ knives? Is Spyderco taking a loss on these to ensure people can buy them? Are other dealers marking up the prices more then some?

Yes but when you consider that these are all s30v/titanium handle knives that are on the lowest end of the scale already and we are trying to find the absolute lowest then $10 does make a difference.

No, it doesn't. To get a true sense you'd compare the MSRP, the lowest street price, the mean street price, and the standard deviation. Then you'd compare the difference between the lowest and the mean to the MSRP to get a sense of how much is profit.

This is Why I love blade forums!

Also, to keep things on topic, I really really like the Spyderco Native, but my wife stole mine. Gives me an excuse to buy more knives? I can't complain.
Another thing, keep in mind that it can be very time consuming to sharpen s30v, especially if you don't have to correct stones or sharpening system.

If I were in your shoes I'd buy a spyderco tenacious and a good diamond stone.

The original poster asked about affordable S30V knives (or other top steels) under $50.
Why does this discussion derail (as many do) towards the "Not made here debate"? That wasn't the question. I would prefer the "are knives made in country X acceptable" kind of comments to stay in a dedicated thread !
Also, the Sage 2 and some of the mentioned Benchmades, while probably very good, are two to three times the budget of the OP.

In the name of all that is holy, don't buy a Gerber EZ-out (or anything from them really) that knife is CRAP, lock failed and nearly cut my finger off!

I second the Browning Ice Storm suggestion, great design great construction and ridiculously low price. You CAN NOT do better for the price. However they are a little aggressive-looking.

It has to be a folder, and I'll be using it for small tasks like widdling wood, opening packages, small tasks around the house).

As some others have suggested, I would forget about looking for a certain steel. Especially if these are going to be your main uses for the knife. In fact I would recommend going in the complete opposite direction and getting something that will be easy to sharpen.

IMO, take a look at the Kershaw Skyline, Boker Trance, or Spyderco Tenacious, and then start saving up for a Spyderco Sharpmaker :cool:

Get a Spyderco Delica 4. It's made of VG10 steel, which is only one cut below S30V. You can get it for under $50 from yourcornerstore.

Regardless of how well it's made there are 2 problems I have with it being made in Taiwan.

1. Part of the fun of knives is showing it to your friends and people. But for anyone who isn't familiar with it when they see "Taiwan" stamped in the blade it makes you look like a cheap person who owns a cheap knife.

...so do actually use a knife or is just a fashion accessory to show off?

i have a SOG Field Pup stamped "Taiwan" on it, was real cheap too, $27...everyone used that cheap Taiwan knife on a camping trip this year, from cutting veggies, sectioning whole chickens, and batoning wood for the fire...they could have used the $350 lg. sebenza 21 right next to it, but nobody did...cause for the most part NOBODY CARES, just needed a good tool to get a job done...

a "cheap knife", in our circumstance here, is relative to its purpose...so i guess i'll just keep that ghastly Field Pup out of public view from now on, LOL...

I was wondering whats a good knife (Under $50) preferably S30V.
Keep in mind this will be my first knife :), and I live in Texas so I can't have a blade over 5.5Inches, switchblade, assisted, double sided, dagger.

I'm also young (turning 13 in a couple days).

I just turned 18 but have been collection for 2-3 years now. My dad gave me consent though.

Just so I'm not derailing thread further, you can find kershaw Leek S30Vs for $55 or so at some places.

I had forgotten about the S30V Leek. Good value all things considered.

First, the Buck Vantage Pro is a steal at it's full MSRP of $75 - a great buy where I saw them this afternoon at a B P for $45. Plus - you get a knife made in ID, USA by folks who are taking a 10% pay reduction this week, due to lacking sales. If you like that blade, the next better handle it comes in is the Ti #172 Wamea TNT - MSRP $350 - then the carbon fiber #172CFSLE - MSRP $450.

Now, if you can find a Benchmade 635 for $160, grab it. Some folks list everything on their site 'in stock'... call them, and it's usually a different matter. Nice knife - but, at a third, or less, of it's cost, a Buck Vantage Pro is a real pocket knife. I've opened packages, whittled, sliced fruit & veggies with mine. I EDC-ed a Spydie Native, one of those $40 WallyWorld ones, for two years - had to re-edge it after cutting down appliance boxes and tree root runners, etc - straight forward on a Sharpmaker. Below are the aforementioned Buck 347 and BM 635:

One attribute the Native has - it's backside is covered, keeping change out. The Vantage Pro likes pocket change. My local gunstore/knife emporium has quite a collection, including $60 Natives, the best deal on them I have seen in the over a year since WallyWorld ran out. I love S30V - and that Vantage Pro!

Stainz

PS I remember sleeping upstairs, okay, they call it a 'ladder', from my shop. Food was supplied, as was a good source/cost for the dress code stipulated clothing. Your address changed a lot - and you were often rocked to sleep - and even thrown out of that bunk. Calling a big burly guy 'Mate!' was as hard to get accustomed to as wearing that funky white hat... and a kneckerchef, blouse or jumper, and bell-bottoms. Ahhh, the Navy!

I would like to recommend the Buck Vantage Pro but cannot. Way late lock up on mine and not that easy to open. Also, the nylon washers are a turn off. I know the Spyderco Tenacious, recommended earlier, is a MUCH better knife!

Vinny

If you want to go for value and also have a knife that will last you, an alternative to the spyderco tenacious is the Ontario RAT 1. It is a really tough knife and it keeps a great utility edge. IMO it is better for carving wood that the tenacious, amoung other things. I would bet that it is a lot stronger too. It is usualy a few dollars cheaper around 25-35 bucks for a plain edge. This one is a sure bet. It meets all your expectations accept for the steel. I really dont understand how they stay on the shelves.
