Cheat sheets

I have a little card (can't remember where I got it,) in my PSK that reads:
"When in worry, when in doubt
Run in circles, scream and shout.
When in worry, when in doubt
Run in circles, scream and shout."
If you say this over and over during a crisis, you begin laughing very quickly and once that happens, you calm down immediately, start thinking calmly and quickly, and begin doing what needs be done! Oddly enough, it actually works! :)

As someone pointed out, by the time the kit is needed, there isn't really time for learning new skills so something that will help the individual relax and think more clearly might be the best bet.

I think I'm going to include this.

At the most I want to make 3 laminated cards, maybe only 2. They will be printed on both sides so that can give you 6 separate message 'boards'. If you make too many cards, it gets too bulky and ends up staying at home. I wore the pouch kit yesterday, all day, and you don't even notice it's there.

Ya know.... You are correct there. I know of no info to back up that, but have read numerous books that outline it as the number 1 killer......
I have written to the authors of seven books that say as much, asking politely for their source(s). No responses. Everyone knows. How dare I?

Here's some I've come up with so far. I welcome your comments. Please excuse crappy pictures.

These together would comprise 3 laminated double-sided cheat sheets.

Those look great Doc! Good idea well executed.

Thanks guys.

I'm also working on alternate cheat sheets. I've just done one with Ground To Air signals.

Maybe do one with the fire triangle?

More suggestions needed! :)

Makes you think...... I do believe it is one of the easiest to controll though, and a very important thing to remember to look at.

I have run numerous heart attacks in the field or woods..... Man it happens alot more then people think!

Try this link. http://www.mountwashington.com/deaths/index.html It's only for one area in New Hampshire, the Presidential Range, which is pretty short, centering on Mt.Washington. (Just about 10 miles long and rather narrow in the White Mountain Nat. Forest.) The list they show only goes up to 2004, but shows 7 deaths since 1990 due to hypothermia, 2 due to heart attack, a lot due to falls (climbing and skiing,) and avalanche, with a total of 34 deaths for the 18 years. Contacting the National Parks Service should provide information for all National Parks nationwide, which would give a fairly good estimation.

Thanks! I'm honored! People just usually laugh off my suggestions... (I would. :p ) until they find them working! But I've used this one several times, and it really does get you laughing like a fool after about the third or fourth repetition, and lets you deal constructively with the situation!

Question: Who and how are your bags made? Crochet? I really like this idea. It beats the wad of jute I have rolled up in my kit taking up space.

We are all approaching this problem from a man's standpoint, but I seem to recall a story from a few months ago where a woman successfully used her bra as a distress signal. I think that wound up working rather well in that case...Maybe some information about "improvised" signals would be appropriate. Just a thought. :0

Hey LittleHairyApe, there isn't enough room left in the can (it's very small) for a bra. What about a thong?

Oh, and the more I think about it, that would be a man's point of view. :D

Hey stitchawl, I'm not sure. :( Did you answer your own question?

Doc

Hmmmm.... I don't know how to crochet, but I can weave a couple of flat rectangles
and stitch them together (My kit is in a rectangular tin. :D )
I'll have to give that a try. Perhaps like making
a flat 6 lead by seven bight 'turkshead' knot with jute twine.
You've got me motivated! Thanks!

Looks good G.P.

Do you think there is enough room in there for 1 of those Renolds oven bags ?

No, GS, the can is full to the top. There are tons of things that could be added - a modified utility blade for example:

but you have to draw the line somewhere - too big and bulky, it gets left behind.

Think of this as a first night PSK. The next day you have more time (and light) to burn out a bowl/make a Birch bark pot, in which to purify water and all the other things that are necessary.

I didn't know how to crochet, either, until I learned. The joy of it being crocheted is it's easy to unravel the pouch giving you about 100' of jute. This is a finer jute than is normally used, otherwise the pouch would be very bulky, but with some cordage skills, it's quite easy to 2 or 3 ply cord it into some stronger material. (Geez, I hope there aren't any English teachers on this board :o)

You over estimate my skills:o Your gonna have to spend more time with your G.S. and teach me

Oh wait, I do now how to burn a bowl out, but I can't make a birchbark pot.
