Lastly, from those that own and know, is the BK1 Brute an even better chopper than the BK9, or was the BK9 the improved version?
Never owned a Brute, so I may not qualify as being in the know, but looking at the specs I see that the
BK-01 and
BK-09 are (or at least were) fairly similar in size and weight. There was about 4 oz. more weight behind the Brute. That, combined with the blade geometry differences would mean to me that one could expect the Brute to be a slightly better chopper.
That said, I know from personal experience that the blade and handle shape of the
Machax is likely to blow away the 9 in a chopping contest. I'm comparing the relative shape, weight, blade thickness and length to the Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri, which I've owned for the last 2+ years, and talking strictly chopping, it's better for that task than a 9 by a significant margin. Now, the original Machax is thinner and lighter (by 3 oz.) than the Gurkha, and the forward/down sweep shape is not identical, but assuming whatever changes end up in the new Machax don't stray far from the differences already noted, or go towards making it a little heavier, I think the Machax is going to be the Becker line's #1 chopper when it comes out.
Now, all
that said, the 9 is still my all-around, go-to camp knife. It is
much easier to baton with than the Gurkha, as well as draw-cutting, fuzz-stick-making etc. As awesome as a chopper as the Gurkha is, it's kind of a one trick pony for the outdoorsman. As a weapon, I suppose, it's much more than that, which is where it got its name from, but I'm not a fighter at all and prefer things that go BANG! if I was ever forced to become one, so how good a weapon it is doesn't matter a wit to me.
In short, I will definitely get a Machax and a Brute, and may even find that I have no more need or use for the Gurkha and sell it. But likely as not, the 9 will remain my go-to blade for any serious outdoors adventures, and the Machax and Brute will tag along when it's a drive-to camp site or for use in the yard or whatever.
