Check out THIS carry combo baby!! PIX!

Emile, have you seen the mountain Dew commercial where the guy buts head with a Ram? Its hilarious as well

No, as far as I know, that one didn't air (yet) in NL. Will watch out for it.

In the wilds of the citys I tend to always carry a .45 of one sort or another. In the woodsy wilds of the woods I tend to prefer my Redhawk with some select 270 gr jacked soft nose Gold Dots by Speer in front of 20.5 gr of h 110. It is a little over redline, but acceptable in the Redhawk or a TC. That may not stop a charging Griz, but it will stop anything I have encountered in this state. I might even strap on the Falcata as a tool for the final stroke. If that failed , the bear would have to climb up a huge pile of my excrement to get at me. PHEW!!!!!!!!

You know the Redhawk was chambered in .357, .41, .44 and 45 Colt? It doesn't take a munk to figure you must own the 44. If you want the absolute best chance at a real bear, consider either your own concoction with a 300 gr hard cast bullet, or one of the specialty companies, someone loads a 325 though I don't rmember who.

The speer gold dot will not penetrate as well as a hard cast. No controlled expansion bullet will.

There is no topic i enjoy more than what bear load to use. Everyone in the lower 48 seems to need one. I think its great. We are all of us waiting for the expected explosion of the Griz bear population...and it is true a black will occasionally give some trouble.
The only bear I ever worried about was a small one I found on a fireroad. I stopped pedaling the bike, pulled out my trusty harmonica and played. One confused bear!

I wish I could own a 45 Redhawk but have every reason to expect the chambers would be just as large as on their single actions. If I ever find 500 dollars I'll get the Ruger 480.

I didn't think much good about the 44 till I tried 300 grain bullets. Settles it right down and shoots great.

The bear would likely eat your excrement as climb it. I think wacking a reaching paw as he climbs the tree after you with a khuk is a good idea.

munk's revolvers: 38 target S&W (old style) 41 4" SW, 7.5 41 Redhawk, 7.5 41 Bisley Blackhawk, Super Redhawk 44 6.75 barrel (a little project) , 375 Supermag Dan Wesson 8", 32 H&R mag SW target 6", .45 Colt 4.5/8" SS Ruger custom grip frame.

You are right. 44 it is. They make the Redhawk in the 45/454 combo, plus as you stated the new 480. I met someone that just bought the 480. I will be interested in how it performs for him. I have thought of getting some hard cast. One of my old hunting buddies was getting something hot for his 45-70 from Barnes or barnet?? Someone with a name like that. I will have to ask him. I actually have been thinking of getting a Marlin 45-70 Guide gun. I shot one recently and really loved. I do not hunt much any more though, so it would be more for fun than anything. I used to hunt with a TC in 45-70, with the hunter barrel. I really like that round. It felt like field artillery when shooting it, but was managable with that muzzle brake they use. Only one shot though. But a stout one. I tend to like large bore firearms when I do go shooting.
When I was young and in the Marines I always thought it would be fun to hunt Grizzly with a hangun. Now adays , I can't see me going out to hunt one just for trophy. When I hunt now it is just for food. I do not judge someone that hunts for trophy, it is just that as I have gotten older I have found an appreciation for the place all creatures hold in the grant scheme of things. I tend to like the fact that there are other things in the woods that are tougher and more dangerous than me. It reminds me of my place in the world, and keeps me a little more humble. After all I am only human.

Funny how things have changed. In the '60's your wandering piece was a Woodsman, High standard, or Ruger semi .22, or single action ruger or da Smith or Colt in same caliber. Town carry was a snub .38 or .380 pistol.

Now everyone wants a magnum or 45 and up for the trail, and a highcap or 45 in town. Even I have stepped up to a 32 auto with 6" barrel and target sights in the desert, and thirteen shot 380 around town. I don't carry the 20" Sirupati but do have it in my truck. Sad state of affairs.

More on munk's stopping power theories

I don't remember what speer says for the 270 Gold Dot. I could look it up, but am not going to. I am predicting a lung shot in a Elk would work with the round. It would kill any mountain lion ever made, and might even be about perfect for that role, rolling through any combination of muscle and bone a lion could have. Might be a tad too heavy.

My theory is any good deer round will kill a mountain lion, I would prefer the heavier side of things. There is always the chance you'll sail one through. Hard cast is not needed for lions. Despite what some Outfitters now say about treed cougars, I think the 357 OK for this. The local lion chaser agrees. If I met one around the corner I'd like something heavier.

I believe Hal Swigget, JD JOnes, Elmer Keith, et all about handguns and bears. You'd better be able to penetrate. A grievious injury with an expanding bullet will not save your life even if mortal.

I have never killed a single bear. I enjoy the fruits of hydroelectic and nuclear power without understanding exactly how each work. It is unlikely I will kill a thousand bears in my lifetime with enough combinations of cartridge and load to have first hand experience. I rely upon the experts.

munk and ballistic nonsense for a saturday morning, somewhere in the fog in Montana.

Now we need a discussion thread called: Stopping power for wild animals; which Khukuri????

That's right, I remember reading you old timers would carry High Standards. EVeryone had to have one. Heck, Iwish I had one. I was a young skull full of mush and social engineering then, didn't wander into firearms until I was 30.

there's that stupid aspirin commercial: Life got tougher,so we got stronger." Well, I don't believe that, but you can measure the increased hardware by the decreased individual responsibility in this society, and the less and less control any of us really have.

Forgot about the .454 in the Ruger. Also chambered in .45 alone. I would prefer that if the chambers were only tight.
