Chinese "food chain"

you know what's weird - I have a great fixed blade - a 'spartan blades' in 9cr18mov. I got it from china a few years back. According to their website however, they say they make stuff in the USA

https://spartanbladesusa.com/about/

so what's the deal? I'm guessing it's the usual thing where they make some stuff in the USA, but all their volume work is china? Or is this a complete knock off? The quality is really top notch, I got lucky with a $40 gamble.

Yea, you got a garbage knockoff. Spartan blades are all S35VN and made in North Carolina. There are knockoffs of their work coming out of china and other places, one of which you apparently bought.

You didn't get lucky, you got screwed.

To be fair to the Chinese knife makers, they dont just make rubbish, althought its at a lower price the quality is still there. Those guys at Real steel even have a USA website- http://www.realsteelknivesusa.com/ WTF; that is cool!

Exactly, to be hoesnt I have nothing against big companies like Spyderco etc, but lets be honest with ourselves, the majority of workmanship is done in China!!! The only company I know that actually is made in USA is benchmade in Oregon.

All these people are the same person..or at the very least,..posting from the same company..Wonder which company that would be?

Everything with Chinese knives seems so uncertain. I can never find good reviews on knife sites, and the prices are going up.
You can't find a good review on Kizer or WE knives? Not to push anything on you - don't buy anything that doesn't appeal, you know? - but I have yet to see a negative review on one. Features that were dinged in a review, yes. Overall bad, no.

Based on my experiences, I've had pretty good luck with the reputable Chinese companies. From what I've had, I'd stick Reate at the top for machining and attention to detail, with Bestech and WE having top notch quality but that just slightly lower quality (still matching or beating US stuff at much higher prices), Rike, Real Steel, and Kizer all having great quality and superb hits, but less than perfect QC departments (expecting quality, but not being utterly floored if I get a lemon), and Stedemon trailing the pack for still being good but being obviously budget (every knife I like has real drawbacks, but I overall like them still) .Honorable mention to Harnds for my Talisman being utterly perfect in QC, but a sample size of 1 is not enough to give an honest opinion of.

I haven't had any knives consistently bad from any of the Chinese manufacturers to the point that I wouldn't consider them, but I stay away from the seriously low end stuff or my experience is meh enough that I don't care to talk about their products, good or bad.

thomas h, and craytab, I'd like to mention that I don't feel screwed.

I knew I was buying direct from China, so there was no illusion there. I didn't expect I was getting a USA made spartan, it was 9cr18mov after all.
The blade came in a perfect kydex sheath, included in the $40 price tag. From what I can tell, the HT is also very good; I've used it on a lot of wood and for splitting logs and just about anything else you would not want to use a $200+ knife on. The black and green g10 handle was also very well done and I enjoy using it. The weight is perfectly centered around the index finger.

To make a long point simple, I would have bought it without the spartan logo. I was buying a budget beater, and it has held up in that respect with flying colours.

I've added my input to make a point as it relates to the Chinese mfg chain, not for validation & approval. It's a subtle but important difference.

So you knowingly supported counterfeiting that hurts a quality American company. That is far worse than getting screwed. You should be ashamed. Know that what you have done is not at all what this forum and community stands for. What some people do to save a buck...

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Wrong, I knowingly bought a Chinese knife because I wanted a budget fixed blade beater. This was quite a few years ago, and I was in no way going to spend hundreds on a USA made Spartan. Truth be told, I didn't know if they had a Chinese setup like Spyderco has where they make a 'budget line' from China.

Spartan USA did not lose any money from me, at all, since at the time I was not in a position to spend extravagantly on them. I have not tried to resell it, or pass it off as a USA Spartan, nor would I. I didn't think they were trying to do so either, since they stamped 9cr18mov on the blade as well. Would a counter-fitter do that?

If it has a Spartan stamp on the blade it is unquestionably a counterfeit and, at minimum, an attempt to steal business from a reputable American company. There are plenty of Chinese made beater fixed blades from reputable companies available.

No, you are wrong. You knowingly supported counterfeiting and are now bragging about it on an enthusiast knife forum that is very anti-counterfeiting. Justify it anyway you want. I understand you are new here and may not quite get the issue with this but supporting counterfeiting hurts this hobby and this community. These are undeniable facts.

I never tried to fit a counter but I would'nt put anything past scumbags who make fakes.

Admitting to and defending buying counterfeits never goes well on this forum. Take the loss and stop now

Exactly. Excuses.

Yea I'm not okay with that either. There are plenty of affordable original designed beaters. If your going to be "that guy" Keep the clones to yourself. You don't have to buy USA just don't support clones.
