I thought I'd never own a Chinese flashlight, either, after SureFires and the like, but I picked up a Luma-Hunter M1 with a Cree LED and it's quality is every bit as high as SureFire's. Plus an added bonus in that they are able to implement improved LED technology faster than a large company such as SureFire. The end result is a flashlight on par with American companies, quality-wise, at reduced cost, that actually performs better.

Fostering competition is always good for the consumer.

I'll go on record as saying that the knives we produce in China are not on the same level as those made at the facility in Tualatin. They are nice knives, but we're able to just make a better product here. Materials are better here, the labor is more skilled, and many other factors play to the absolute fact that we here in the US can just manufacture knives better.

If as a US manufacturer, you can't produce a knife better than one you bring in from China, you're not trying too hard.

I'll also go on to say that no manufacturer that brings in product from China is immune from quality inconsistencies. Don't fool yourselves.

Now the Echo is a fine knife, straight forward, decent steel. The Vapor gets really nice reviews, and funny enough, the Outcast, which boasts a Dupont made Santoprene handle, and D2 steel (both "western" made), really performs well.

I will NEVER by a Kershaw or Ken Onion knife Made in China, EVER!! NEVER!! and I mean NEVER. Matter of fact I will never buy ANY knife made in China.

BTW - I LOVE Kershaws and own quite a few, but made in China?
That would be the last straw.

(Sorry, had to let off some steam, but I've had it with "Made in China".)

rant over-

I guess we all need to throw out our shoes, TVs, stereos, phones, DVD players,
watches, cameras, printers, scanners, monitors........Oh my....what else
should I start chunking out in the yard?

I love American Made as much as anyone, but we do trade with China as well
as a number of other countries. Just because it says China doesn't mean all
is bad.

Agreed. I also commend the fact that Thomas came right out and basically said, "hey, it's not as great as our US made knives, but is still a good product." That takes some big ones, and alot of confidence in your products -and it makes an excellent point.

Yeah, it's "made in China"...but you're still getting a Kershaw, and as such you're getting a hell of a good knife considering the price you're paying for it.

Along with that goes warranty and the best customer service.

chinese onions are still a disapointment and dont come close to the quality of my american made kershaws. i also ended up with a chinese buck, and that ended up in the bottom of the river. i couldnt do that to a kershaw but it would be nice to see all kershaws come out of the goood old USA.

Guess you misunderstood like many others here.
First I'm talking strickly Kershaw knives, we all get it about the tv,pc and the likes. But like tw said, the quality of USA knives and China knives is like night and day, whether its Benchmade or anything else. Its made in China for a reason, and that reason isnt quality.
If others see my point of view as childish, so be it.
Buy all the made in China Kershaws your heart desires. I wont be on that line.

My ECHO seems to be a good knife so far. The sheath is a piece of garbage but the knife is good. Would I have bought it if I knew it was made in China? No. It does not mean it is not a decent knife. I just avoid buying stuff made in China whenever I can and that goes with other stuff too. It is a consumer choice to do so just like other consumers can choose to buy stuff made in China. I do not buy Benchmades or Spydercos made in China either. I am not saying I never buy anything made in China but I am saying I avoid it. Again my Echo seems to be a very nice knife with a garbage sheath.

what hasnt hit tih market yet?
Sorry bradym, got confused and thought we were talking about the OSO Sweet.

it would be nice to see all kershaws come out of the goood old USA.
Indeed, but obviously we have that 30+ year relationship with Japan, and then there's that factory of ours in China...not to mention we do have limitations here at the US factory.

I just took a look at all 3 of my Nikon cameras (a pair of N90s' and a N60), as well as my Olympus OM cameras, and two Citizen Ecozilla watches, and they all say "made in Japan"...Not China.:D.

I think if there is any company to complain about in regard to Chinese manufacture, it is not Kershaw.
They are just about the only company I know of that puts out good locally made folders for less than $40 (JYD, Storm, Leek, Scallion, Chive, Needs Work, and soon the Skyline).

Here's something that Ken Onion posted in a similar thread.

Though I agree with what you are saying I had the privilege of going to China last year and seeing first hand how and who is making these knives . I disagree with the comment that it makes the govt rich. Kai corp. Kershaw's parent company owns the factories that make these knives. So the money goes to them and the Chinese employees . All the people I met are gracious and kind people and happy for the oportunity to support their families. They love Americans and America and treated me like a king. I'm sure if given the oportunity they would come to America in a second. They were born into their circumstances and have little control over it. I am happy to have a little part in giving those people a chance at a decent living. I don't care for the gov't of China either, nor do I condone their politics. But remember those people that protested in Tienemen square don't either because somewhere they were exposed to the concept of freedom. I won't turn my back on a people because of their gov't and hope that by their exposure to our culture they too will force their gov't into a democracy. It is all to easy to judge a race by their gov't but you will be wrong. Kershaw is also not running a sweat shop. Kai/Kershaw take good care of there employees and have brought alot of jobs to that area.
Ask anyone who owns a Vapor if it's junk ? Show me a thirty dollar knife that can top it.
My point is not to lecture but to inform. Believe me if I thought this was sweat shop knives or gov't funding or anything was shady in any way I would have nothing to do with it. I went, saw and made a decision based on that. Don't be so quick to judge nor so quick to assume And thank God every day that you live in America!

So is there a way to tell before you buy them (ex online) that they are made in China? I was looking on Kershaw's website and didn't see anything.

Dude, with all due respect, those cameras were made in the previous century! :D Of course they were made in Japan. But now, now there's quite a few bodies and even more lenses made in China nowadays. Certainly the majority of point-and-shoot cameras are made there. One of the lenses for my Pentax K10D was made in Vietnam.
