Chippy steels

Any steel can be chippy if abused. Only steel I've ever had chips on is S30V on my Manix 2. I've pushed the edge quite back as it got really thick BTE over the years, and put a mirror polish on it. My friend wanted to cut his ciggy's filter so I gave him the Manix and he proceeded to cut the filter on concrete. Dude even had the audacity to call it dull afterwards. Hearing the sound it made in my head now is the closest I've been to shell shock.

this is why discerning knife owners offer to cut things for people

I’ve read different accounts of people using someone else’s knife like this before. How can someone with a normal IQ, and an ounce of common sense think that cutting into concrete shouldn’t damage a knife blade?

Just take a look at the steel victorinox uses, not a super steel by any means but stays relevant through all this static AND is a very high performer, I sacrificed two saks by wacking edges together, barely any Knicks
Solid stuff

As a big fan of Victorinox, Buck, Case, Opinel and vintage, U.S.-made Old Timers, I find this whole thread rather amusing. 😆

Never had a SAK with a bent tip ?

Regarding the OP‘s question, I’ve chipped Spyderco M390, broken Spyderco 4V (tip) and Maxamet (blade) and broken Bark River „Cruwear“ (larger part of the edge).

I hope that each of you shared your experience(s) with the knife maker's QC department.

I'm wondering if a thread about how to successfully talk with a companies' QC department would be helpful? Or would that belong in individual knife maker's forums? Or did I just off-topic myself?

I haven't had any blade become chippy. I have had some difficulties sharpening some blades, though. I pay close attention to those 'how to' threads.

I usually ask people what they need to cut, due to reading such stories. Dude works in construction where every knife is as sharp as rebar, can't blame him with that in mind. We didn't know each other that well then, but he's come around and familiar with what a sharp knife is and how to use one.
