Choil or No Choil?

The WTG Ares drops in 3 weeks and it had me thinking about this question as they have a design with and without a choil. So the consensus is no choil?

First of all, dammit you got me. I liked about 4 post on the first page before I checked the date of 2015 so that’s on me.

While I’m here I might as well say my piece.
I do not like finger choils at all. I have avoided buying several knives(looking at you Spyderco) because these huge choils eating up valuable cutting edge real estate.

I do like having a tiny sharpening choil or sharpening notch.

I usually avoid choils. I'd rather get a longer blade or longer handle than have a choil that's neither.

It also depends on how it's implemented and what you're using a knife for.

On ESEE3 or 4, they are OK, but given the option not to have one - I'd probably take it, and make a knife either shorter overall or get more edge.

But in all reality, if I grab the choil, I have more control for fine work and push cuts, carving and that stuff... but it's not really safe for other tasks. And if I grab just the handle without the choil - then I'm too far from the edge. So, both kind of grips can leave the user a bit confused.

Neutral types of handles tend to work the best. Examples would be: F1, S1, A1, SRK.... and so on.

I don’t mind choils, i like them on my pm 2 n 3. I really like the one on my lil native. I can go from a 3 finger grip to a full grip with the choil.

It's 2023. Start a new thread if you must...Necroposts are frowned upon around here.
