Ban, would you mind telling us what you're target point for hardness is with this one? I've been reading up on M390 and ELMAX and it looks like 61-62HRC is the sweet spot for them. They supposedly have great wear resistance but are still tough at that hardness. What's your take?

I am not sure what the toughness is for M390 but I am aiming for roughly around 61-62rc. Phil Wilson thinks that it is a good hardness for M390. Both Elmax and M390 are suppose to be a good deal tougher than S30v because of the finer grain structure that is achieved with Bohler's 3rd Gen powder technology. Gonna try and fill up my dewar with liquid Nitrogen tomorrow and get ready for some heating.

Ha! Phil Wilson is who I got most of my info from.

I think he's a member here, but the guy called jankerson has done some testing with ELMAX and he was saying that in his, albeit non entirely scientific tests, it began to approach 3V in toughness. For a stainless, that's amazing. That's what piqued my interest and he and others are big fans of M390 too.

I really hope they live up to the hype. i remember the hoopla with S30V and the let down when the whole chipping thing started happening. Had it happen on a few of my S30V knives and it sucked.

Looking foward to it!!! :D

Sitting in the cryo tank now. Heat treated this and another M390 BT4 earlier today. Triple temper tomorrow and then it is good to go.

Didn't try out his tip yet. Forgot about it when I was wrapping the blades. Luckily I was able to peel most of the foil off.

If you want tough stainless then Elmax is the way to go. I ordered some to try out for myself. It is a good bit tougher than M390 and supposedly 50-60% tougher than S30v. It is basically Bohler's version of S30v using their 3rd Generation powder technology. So far I am really liking s35vn for a good all around stainless with a good combination of toughness and wear resistance.

" I ordered some to try out for myself."

Hell yes! I look forward to what you have to say and how it works out.
