Choose Wisely (One Knife)

I carry a fixed blade on my belt pretty much every single day. It's not huge, not terribly noticeable, but I've never had anyone comment on it (well, one friend complimented it when I was using it) or be upset by it.

I've gone 180° on EDC fixed blades during my time here and find them handy, unobtrusive and much less of a problem than I originally thought, as long as you can legally carry one.

Same. If I'm not at the office, I've got an EDC fixed blade on me.

Speaking strictly of knives only and not any cutting tools in general, my criteria would be versatility, major types of use, environment, ease of replacement/warranty and legality:

Based on al. tho, one of the following would be my choice:

A) A 4-4.2” large stockman. 3 blades, tipically a clip point, sheepfoot ans a spey one. Versatile, useful, compact, optimal for urban living. Multiple makers, always possible to buy an affordable yet guality replacement.

or

B) a 4.5-7” fixed blade.
My choices would be:
ESEE-4 or ESEE-6 or a Becker BK-7.
Could be used for most small knife tasks, but better suited for outdoors use. Due to the grinds, they would make acceptable kitchen knives too. The ESEEs have unbeatable warranty, the Becker’s one is great too. The could be great for country living, very versatile.

What I would definitely NOT choose for this scenario is a Pakistani knife. Not worth risking to get a poorly made knife or a knife like object - that is unfortunately a very likely occurrence.

Good thing that all this is a hypothetical.

Insulting or Rude behavior
What I would definitely NOT choose for this scenario is a Pakistani knife.
Ah yes, it was only a matter of time before someone turned petty and intentionally pretended my curiosity about cheap knives was a recommendation. You're a prick. You're on Ignore now.

you’re gonna carry a fixed blade to your kid’s soccer game? Church? Work?
yes, 24/7. I’ve carried a fixed-blade nearly every day since I was 16 years old, it’s always proven to be more useful than a folder. Easier to clean, comfier to use, and more reliable through hard use over the long term.

I don’t take it out inside Church, but I do occasionally whittle outside Church after Sunday Mass.

If I had to choose just one, I’d be torn between three blades. My Gollik Knives custom, my Buck 124, and my LTWK Boattail.

Gollik Knives custom with a flat grind, 6.5” blade of 0.25” thick Sleipner steel w/ black and green G10 handles and red liners:

Buck Knives 124 with a hollow grind, 6.5” blade of 0.18” thick 420HC with black linen Micarta handles:

LT Wright Knives with a scandi grind, 3.4” blade of 0.12” thick A2 steel with green canvas Micarta handles:

All three of these knives have done everything from bushcraft to kitchen work to mundane package opening. And a WHOLE LOT of woodcarving. I’d be happy with any of them.

I’m definitely more of a folder type guy. The question is, a slipjoint or a lock blade? A Case Peanut is really handy & legal most places. A Buck 112 is heavier duty.

These days, I rarely go anyplace my pocketknives aren’t welcome, and even a sheathed lock blade.

I do not fight bears, especially with a knife. ;)

A BUCK112FG, with their standard 420HC steel, gets the nod, at least for today.

^Nice 112^
What does the FG stand for, flat grind??

If I were only going to choose one knife forever and for everything it would have to be a fixed blade. I’m not really into fixed blades, yet, but one I have been looking at for a while is the RHK Ranch Bowie…. It’s sexy, like an XL version of my XM-24.

Also the CRK Pacific is pretty sweet, but $$$$…
I guess I have expensive taste lol
As far as folders go, my answer could change based on the day, so I can’t decide (Id guess either my XM-24 or Eklipse Bowie/tanto, my Quantum Ursus or my Socom Elite, but preferably all 5)
I could get by with 5 I suppose lol

I'm still looking for a decent way to carry a swisschamp.

It's resigned to a pouch in a small day-hike bag, at present.

A belt worn horizontal kydex sheath could really work....

One knife for everything for the rest of my life? A good fixed blade can do everything a folder can do except conceal well. A folder can't do everything a fixed can do, given the OP's range of scenarios. One of these two would probably do everything I could imagine needing a knife to do and they both will out last me too.
