Choose Wisely (One Knife)

For these questions my answer will always be a smallish fixed blade. Something that can comfortably be concealed carried to abide by the laws of most cities but also can be practically used in the kitchen, in the woods, out in the field etc. Different from the “only one knife for the apocalypse” question because I have to take actual knife carry laws into consideration.

All things considered, it would probably be my Winkler Blue Ridge Hunter. It’s thick enough to withstand some abuse but incredibly slicey and great at everything from breaking down boxes, peeling vegetables, food prep, carving, you name it. It’s also got pretty thin handles and is very comfortable to conceal in my waistband. The sheath can also be repurposed to mount on a belt which is nice.

I'd have to have at least one folder and one fixed blade. Most any good quality folder would do me well in all honesty as long as it wasn't terribly uncomfortable. Really, I could see myself being just fine with only a Mnandi for the rest of my days. However a fixed blade is absolutely imparitive for an outdoors lifestyle. I do not own this knife, which makes it kind of funny to say, but I think a fantastic all round fixed blade would be something like the Kabar Kephart.

Here is another "Why", C campandtravel ... my dogs like the knife :)

That does look nice. I think of all the knives people have mentioned so far, other than the "Nemo" this one is the one I like the look of the most.

My BK-14 fits in a pocket sheath that doubles as my wallet (with some bike inner tube sections stretched across it) and at 7" OAL, comes with me everywhere and in jeans, casual attire and even a suit, unnoticed.

A drop point is an awesome all-around shave and FFG makes it a decent slicer.

It can do most utility and outdoors tastes, as well.

If I could only have one food knife, I'd choose a 7" Dexter Russel fillet knife.

For both uses, I guess a cold steel Canadian belt knife or the original Gronholm Canadian knife in FFG could work well.

For DGAF public wearing and / or end of the world... Kershaw Camp 10 is an amazing blade.
I think that was five or more. The whole fun part of the question is figuring which *one* you'd choose for *all* purposes.

There’s no way I could comfortably carry a fixed-blade out in the world, nor could I easily clear bramble in our little greenbelt with a pocket folder.
I've done both with a Buck 110, though neither one was an ideal experience. Anyway, that's the point of the exercise.
can it be a made up knife?
My ruling: Yes, but only if you can draw us a picture.
All you guys and your fixed blades…c’mon…you’re gonna carry a fixed blade to your kid’s soccer game? Church? Work?
I mean, unless you live & work on a farm or forest….or you’re Crocodile Dundee….
Exactly. I agree that some of those big blades were probably not gonna work for most people, but it's still fun to see the blades people come up with.
For me the Stockman
Nice! I've thought about carrying a stockman in town.
ypothetically speaking it would have to be a compromise if I couldn't also choose a smaller folder such as a SAK
Yep. This is exactly why I phrased it like I did. If you can choose two, the two would probably be different from your "one only" choice. Me, I don't carry my Buck 110 because there's no situation I like it best. But if I had one knife, I think it would be the best choice as a compromise. It's the thinky part of the exercise that's fun, glad you're playing by the rules.
Yeah it's a bit silly here in the UK
What actually happens in the UK if you have for example a locking spyderco or something like that? Even an opinel?
a Buck 303
Nice! We're getting a lot of Stockman love here today.
many replies always assume that the kitchen is full of knives, and some assume that somebody else is cooking for them
Ha! GOOD OBSERVATION.

Exactly. Totally different question.
Winkler Blue Ridge Hunter.
Tha looks like an extremely practical blade. I could imagine taking that into the field.

Nope. You only get one in this game.

Carrying a locking knife of any size would be classed as an illegal carry unless you had good reason to carry it such as in work - tree surgeon/work, Stanley knife etc... It would then be down to the discretion of the police to decide. Imo not worth the hassle as at the very least they'd conviscate your knife.

Here across the Pond, I thankfully don't face the severe blade restrictions you are under. But I have reason to cross numerous state (and municipal) borders, where the restrictions can vary wildly -- so I do find myself strategically selecting and carrying blades based on the idiosyncrasies (or, perhaps more accurately, idiotsyncrasies) of the regions I might traverse. :)

i’ve actually done that, i carried just a benchmade 710 for 16 or so years until it was stolen. my wife bought it for me as a wedding gift back in ‘99. here’s the replacement:805D05D3-9A41-45F6-AA63-E3E6B06D53F5.jpeg
i used if for absolutely everything, was my constant companion. before that i had owned a few lockbacks like a buck 110 of spyderco endura, the 710 took over completely. after it was stolen i started buying more knives, never found anything better so i tracked down a replacement in the original ats-34. it’s still one of my most carried knives. would have no problem going back to using it exclusively

I want to say a fixed blade, but folders are just too handy. I would say that if you made me pick one, I'd probably be able to take care of 99% of my likely needs with a large Inkosi.
A 3-3.75" folder handles most everything I could ask.

Oh. So you can carry a fixed-blade but not a lock-back for example? And whose private collection do those confiscated knives end up in?

Camping, roughing it, etc has been off my list for some time. 10 years probably. I'm not an outdoorsman, a survivalist, or anything like that. A folder can get me through my day. If I had to choose one, it would probably be my Spyderco Manix 2 CTS-XHP. Close second the Biryukov #12.

I'm a realist; I know in any kind of dire situation I won't last long. Not to say I won't try to go out fighting, but lack of medication will do me in quickly.
