Recommendation? Choosing my first Bushcraft, Camping, Hiking knife

I would recommend checking out the "Outdoors" or the "Becker" subforums here. You'll see documented trips with different folks using different knives for food, wood work, fire prep, and whittling. Knives in use. See what others are ACTUALLY using. Your best knife is going to be one that fits yours needs the most. Get that Mora, Becker, RMD, Buck, Fallkniven, Jera, etc and go camping with it. Your own personal experience is what's going to determine what's best for you. That's what's great about the knife community, there is something for everyone out there!

I use them for almost anything the 4" blade can cope with.
Do I like them? Not more than I like my hammers, chisels or woodplaners.
I got bored with them already 50 years ago, but, , , I can't be without them!
Reasonable. I guess I use my Vic kitchen knives the same way. Can't say I like them, but they work for most of my kitchen cutting. Have other choices of course. Guess I feel the same way about Mora knives generally..... useful, but not pleasing to my knife-self. I imagine if I were really interested in cooking, I'd have some really good kitchen knives. I don't. They are mostly functional choices.

Your comments would make a potentially interesting thread topic.... does a knife have to be more than functional for you to like it or something along that line? I can draw parallels to Vic SAKs that I use a lot. But do I really like them? I think that I do with regard to Vic SAKs.

Added: I was reviewing my "knife list" and noticed that I don't even mention a Mora of any sort and I own three. For me, they don't even seem to rate getting on a list which is the same way I view the Vic kitchen knives that run $7-$12 each here.

He,he, nope I'm not too passionate of my SAK's & Multitools either, but they are there ready for use when needed.
Knives are also cultural symbols by tradition in most parts of the world and I for one prefer a truly wellmade knife over the simple tool.
Dresscode for carpenters/craftsmen & construction workers here in Sweden are mostly Mora's or Hultafors working knives.
It's assumed by most, that we carry a fixed working knife of some sort and I have conformed to this.

Nowadays the fancy models are a hobby for me to enjoy off work, but I keep a nice pocketknife in the FP for lunchuse.

Regards
Mikael

That is a good approach and I wish you luck. I tend to just keep on looking and adding to the pile.

I’m done buying knives for the time being....I got a great deal on all the knives, so I plan on using them and figuring out what grind I prefer, as well as size. Then after that, I will have a better idea of exactly what I want

I am very close to realizing my plan soon. I want every piece I pick up to put a smile on my face. Every time. That includes SAKs and Leatherman multi-tools. There will only be a dozen plus two axes.

That's good to hear. I am pretty happy with what I own right now even though there are a few gaps in my kit. I still need an axe, saw, and and some sort of machete or froe. I am leaning towards a froe over the machete.

I'd also like to try a CRK Insingo and and I am considering a Lion Steel TM1 or a Spyderco D'Allara 3

As others have stated , I would suggest a Mora (any model) , a small Hatchet , and or a folding saw , these will get you through any situation in which you may find yourself.
:D
Peace.

If you've got decent size hands, the Mora Companion Heavy Duty is amazing, but my wife likes her pink Companion and I find it comfortable as well.
I agree with others, the Becker series from Ka-Bar is nice if you want an all in one, but I don't want to beat on my only knife.
If I go to the woods, I like the Cold Steel Trail Boss boy's axe, and a blade orange Mora Companion Heavy Duty.

So after all of this advice, you're buying nothing???

He picked up a few on the cheap so he can use and figure out what he really wants, like a knife user should. It's cheaper that way. Test some things out and start figuring out what you want, if you're the picky type at least.

Here are some pics of the new blade. Thanks for all the recommmendations! I will use and abuse it and figure out what I like

I also picked up a couple other blades on the forum on the cheap to try out as well. I have a ton of different grinds to try out. Here’s a pic of the others.
