Choosing what to carry

I definitely have trouble choosing everyday. Try to pick based on what I’m doing (almost always office work) but usually whatever I think looks the best that day, and it changes often!

I don’t have as many as some folks here but my collection has definitely grown to a point where there’s always a hesitation in my pick!

Not a dust mote in sight!!!!! How is that possible? Hermetically sealed? I swear- every time I break wind the dust motes taking to the air resemble a snow storm. Very nice collection.

My main EDC knife is always a 91 mm SAK clipped in my pocket, plus (usually) an Executive on my keys. I add a more traditional pocket knife to this depending on which knife I’m trying to create a patina on.

There used to be a knife that was always on me no matter what else I was carrying, but the more knives I acquired the less that really fit for me.
It didn't help that I was eventually carrying way too much stuff.

I try to rotate because I have favorites in every category. I carry a modern folder clipped to RFP and a traditional in bottom of RFP. If I’m feeling frisky I throw another traditional in LFP, riding in a slip if it’s a nice one so it doesn’t get banged up by my keys. I’m mostly in the city so I rarely carry a fixed blade unless it’s small enough to fit in a front pocket or hang from my neck. Lately I try to rotate based on arbitrary rules such as “Trapper Tuesday” as an excuse to drag out something I don’t carry all the time. I really need a system like 5K Qs 5K Qs

Lately I’ve beeb stuck on my latest addition, which is a stainless GEC 53 Cuban stockman. Was looking for this knife for about 10 years, and this one has lived up to the hype and the hunt more than just about any other knife I have managed to track down to date.

Whenever I’m not stuck in the longest honeymoon phase of my collection, I usually go by feeling for what I carry each day. Sometimes I will pair my traditional choice to my larger modern folder of I want, like having both be the same color. I’m a big fan of dark reds/maroon colors so when I get a chance to carry several in that shade I have trouble passing it up. I don’t have anywhere near the size collection that several members here have, but it’s still large enough that I have more than enough to choose from.

Sometimes I just want to take a knife because it’s a better cutter and I’m really wanting a sharp and thin blade to use that day. I spend most days at a desk, so that’s not an everyday consideration, but I do put my knives to work on the weekends and evenings for chores and food prep a good amount.

Sometimes I take a knife just because I want to test out the edge I put on it because I really enjoy sharpening and trying to make the keenest edge I can.

The biggest problem right now is I think I’ve managed to find the “perfect” traditional knife for me, so hopefully something else gets some pocket time soon or I’m gong to have to start thinning the herd 🤣

I appreciate it friend! This definitely made me chuckle, I’d sure like to say that it’s my cleanliness but I’m positive it’s the poor phone camera 😂

And I should add as a mostly city resident I spend a lot of time wishing I could carry and roll out like ferider ferider and Horsewright Horsewright Dave 😃
Totally agree. This site needs a green jealous emoji.
Thanks. Then again- I wish I could ponder which knife to take to the non-existent McDonald or Chinese restaurant sometimes :)
I understand what you are saying, but the scenery and location you have, just gives me a reason to have an outdoor kitchen. Plus my system does not like any brand of fast food.

I have near 15 different possible EDC choices. Most of what I choose depends on what I am wearing at work. Since I ride a desk most of the time, I usually wear slacks/dress pants, so a clunky knife in the pocket wouldn't go well.

I would say about 80% of the time, I carry a Dunlap like this...

Fridays I usually wear jeans or casual pants, so I carry whatever I'm feeling that day...the weekend, all bets are off!

I carry two knives a day and try to rotate through my collection as I try to carry and use all that I have. I usually try to carry at least one knife for the day of the week, like today Wooden Wednesday.

I keep track of what I carry by my daily pictures that I keep in a file and try not to repeat for at least a few weeks, but sometimes favorites or new acquisitions get carried more often.

This is what I currently pick my fixed blades from. Normally, I put a box like this together every 3 months or so, but this one has to hold for ~ a year, until I get access to my other beauties.
