IMHO three inch wide on the blade may be a bit of overkill.
Remember the steel is three inches wide, leaving room for handle and blade curves.
SCARY style might work:eek:

Hey Clive, are you the one that created this?

It looks good, but I'd adjust the handle a bit.

no, not my work.

though I was inspired by a similar santoku I have in my kitchen. I had always wondered if it would do as good a job chopping tree limbs as it did steak and ribs.

My favourite detail about santoku's is the clearance from the belly of the blade to the handle. It does a wonderful job of protecting the hand and allowing the blade to go flat to the ground for even cuts.

for my initial chopper design I angled the handle downwards more at an angle for a more natural chopping motion. I believe that the handle of the blade in the picture is horizontal because for a kitchen knife, the user will be more over the blade for more control.

Swamp Liking what you did, maybe a little more pointy.
Tough and Scary while being user friendly

I don't know about this contest business, but I like the challenge posed by working within your material's constraints. I am also thrifty and don't like waste. So, I've been working on this piece of paper for a couple of days.
I might even go and get these patterns water jet cut one day!

Lorien,

what's the OAL of that Kukri looking object?

it all fits in an 3 x 12 inch rectangle. The handle is right around 5 inches.

Got the idea for this one from a "corn knife", which is basically a machete like blade, but with a wide tip and is used to cut corn stalks.

thompsonblades I love the first one in post 27. Howsabout a straight back edge and spine? Also howsabout a higher grind?

Also love the full hand guard like in post 34. Might wanna make more room in the pinky section. So it won't hurt my hands when I punch :)

Sharpen the front edge on this one with a chisel grind. You won't get more chopping power than this design provides in this size envelope. Needs a reverse hourglass tang with a pommel flare too like a fighter.
