Looking for a chopper between 6 and 9 inches in blade length for bationing kindling and camp work... I'd prefer convex but would consider other grinds... I'm looking at fallkniven a1, the brkt canadian camp knife, RD-7....RTak 2, or a leuku from ragweed forge..ALready have a machete..12 inch blade, would like something a little shorter....any suggestions?? thanks..

Don't know how you feel about khukris, but a 12" Ang Khola from HI seems to fit the requirements. The 12 inch measurement is an overall length so the blade length should be somewhere around 7 or 8 inches I think. I only have one HI khuk so far, a baby BAS model, about 9" overall, and it's a great little knife. An AK is near the top of my "want" list.

If you decide on a khukuri, check out the safe handling and use section of the HI site.

The new swamp rat ratweiler has just been released. The store is out of stock at the moment, but they should have more soon. 7.5" blade awesome chopper and do all knife.

i believe the rtak2 is 10". the khuk's probably the best chopper in existence. you could get a short hatchet, too. otherwise, your standard bowie domain has many options.

swamp rat's selling the updated ratweiler. that's a legendary knife and they're not gonna get any easier to come by. try and grab one, bout the same price as the falkniven.

i'm waiting for the scrapper 7.

I have pretty much all you have mentioned. I recommend a Khurki hands down. My BAS is just awesome. One of my favorite all rounders. I don't know how much chopping performance your going to get in that blade length range. But when I start grabbing a knife for delimbing I grab one of three: My khurk, Battle rat, or Tromantina.

In my opinion, my Leuku is like a small machete with good steel, not a whole lot of chopping ability. Here is a pic of my Khurk, a tad bigger maybe than what your looking for but it's all buisness. Cost like 60 bucks on the exchange.

With my favorite custom .357 and howler for comparison

Good luck in your search

BRKT should have a new run of its Golok by Christmas, if you can stand the wait! :D

The Golok has an 11" blade, is very light and agile, chops like a light saber, and is a sheer pleasure to baton with.

The BRKT Canadian Camp knife is also quite good, especially if you want to combine camp cooking prep with chopping and batoning. It has about a 6.5" blade.

Ka-bar heavy bowie #1277 14 1/2" overall with a 9" blade. 1095 steel, and under $50.00 most places. a great knife to beat up.

That wouldn't be one of those special run 586-7 compensated S&W's. Cause if it is, welcome to the club. I absolutely love mine

If you can go that extra 2", a MKV Khukuri is pretty good for general chores and cost around $70.00 + p/p;

The Scrapyard Knife Works Yard Hook is an excellent chopper in a relatively compact package. 7" blade which is .28" thick and balance is very forward. Finally, the SR-77 steel is some of the toughest in existence, and it holds an edge very well.

You can get it at the Scrap Yard site right now for $120.

For a chopper, I'd take the Ranger RD7 or RD9. Very tough knives, and the price is very reasonable, as well as the availability. The Fällkniven A1 is great, but a bit short for a chopper. The A2 might be better for that.
