oops....wrong kind

I think my small/medium blades are good for the moment (Nansen, M2K, BK11), pocket knives im way cool on, but am thinking i need a big honking piece of steel. Whatcha think?

Should one get a big chopper knife or an axe (never owned an axe btw). My romps include alot of blackjack and pin oak, some cedar trees, willows, etc. Not too many evergreen type trees in these parts.

Regardless of which is better, I think everyone should own a giant chopper. Khukri, Battle Mistress, Ranger RD9, etc... They're just fun.

I personally think an axe is more useful, but that's an ongoing debate.

I agree,nothing like unsheathing a moster blade....a Brute if you will .:D

Axe's chop wood just fine... but there is nothing like smashing things with a Battle Mistress...

Only you know what you need. I have a dozen big choppers and have hardly used any of them. I tend to grab one of my saws for anything big enough to need chopping. I chopped to much wood because I had to in my younger day so I am not entertained much by doing it for fun. Thats just Me though, you may find plenty of uses for one. Every outdoors perso should probably have one just in case.

Comes down to preference. I used to haul a chopper on all my trips, even week long backpacking trips, but they weren't really needed. I eventually sold them all (wish I would have kept a few like my original Battle Mistress, and Rinaldi Armageddon, and a couple Simonich's)
I realized that I should have one big camp knife though, and I won't be getting rid of this one. It's a little more compact and lighter than other choppers I've owned and is an excellent cutter too.

Standard BF response- "Get Both!"
:D

Many years ago i was a big knife guy, then lately i've been an axe and small knife guy.
However .....i just recently finished putting a handle on a Becker Companion blade blank. Love that knife!
I still love axes/hatchets but after a looong hiatus i'm kinda swinging back into big blade mode!
Postman just came to my door with a blade i bought from BF member pageophile. Mint condition CS Trailmaster!
SWEET!
And a second package with some blade blanks from BF member pardue10!
2 Becker Companion blanks and a small Camillus OVB Fisk blank!
The sun is shining , the snow is going and i have new knives!
For me today was better than Christmas!
Woohoo this is a good day!
:D

Axes are great and do a better job felling a tree and most other chopping chores, but the BK9 is just more fun and it's a really handy big knife. It's light enough to do normal work, and big enough to take down small diameter trees in one swipe.

If i were to choose between a chopper and an axe, in northern Alberta the axe is a must. but i do love choppers!!!

I got to say, my SYD makes a great chopper! its only the seven inch model but it does a great job at batoning and general tree and log abuse:D

Edited: IT'S ZOMBIE KILLIN' TIME!!!

TWBryan, nice rehandled Khuk! Bet it feels good in hand

Thank you,yes it does. I find that a leather handle absorbs shock nicely. I've done two others the same way, have one in process now;and I'll probably be working on the big one in that picture next. :) No rest for the wicked.

Those are sweet-looking blades. May I ask who made them?

Here's my favourite chopper, a BK-9:

I have taken this knife instead of an axe on some long outings, and it has performed admirably. I'm starting to get more into axes these days, but my BK-9 has a special place on my wall and still sees some occasional action.

tknife, that NWA is amazing!

All the best,

- Mike
