Chopping/technique threads?

That's about what I did: a breath and some very mild steel wool, and the scrtches were lessened. And I have MAAS, too, and it sure works!

I can't quite bring myself to do something like that. Granted, I would have preferred a villager finish, but the polish was so beautiful, I can't make myself mess with it on purpose. I'll just let hard use remove it, over time.

Hard use will remove most of it the first time, hence my earlier comments.

If you want it to stay shiny, don't ever use it. If you won't ever use it, why buy an HI? Sometimes I wish that they'd skip the polishing process entirely. It only messes with their customers' heads. :)

THAT, I agree with: there's something to be said for using the villager finish as a default, unless otherwise requested by the customer.

Remember, though, I never said that I wanted it shiny, at the expense of being able to use it; that was a distraction from the original topic, sharpening. I always planned for this to be a using knife; I just wanted to make sure I was taking care of the blade properly.

This is more or less how I feel. Less polished blades by other makers I have will often get an FeCl etch. My BC is the only one I've etched... I just had to try it once on an HI/Khadka.

I found that the mirror finish on my M-43 literally repelled any effort at etching, so I said, "to hell with it!" I turned out to be better at polishing, anyway.

I too have found my BC to take a less dark etch than other, less polished blades in my collection. I believed this to be because of said mirror finish, though I ran it by another khuk fan who believed the steel used may have made a more critical difference... Beats me!

I just gave a khuk to a neighbor as a gift with a nice shinny polished finish. It's so pretty he does'nt want to use it!
