Basically the title says it all..I'm a long time owner of the Edge Pro and I'm just now breaking down and upping my "sharpening game" to either Chosera or Shapton stones specifically (2k,3k,5k) grits. Has anyone tried both? Any difference? Or once you get to such a fine grit can you really even make out a difference ?

Thanks in advanced BF members !

I posted this same question a couple months back... they're both top of the line I think you'll be happy with either one...however I went with the shapton glass at the time and just recently bought a few of the shapton pros(bench stones) I like the glass more but the pros are really good too.. from everything I read the only thing chosera wins hands down is feedback.. the pros don't have a lot of feedback while sharpening on them but they cut really fast and leave a great edge

Alright, thanks for the feedback! Seems like I can't go wrong either way, I haven't done my research on what's the difference between the Shapton Pro stones vs the glass ones? I did see that option on chefknives but thought nothing of it ..

I have both and like the feel of the chosera. The shapton pros second then the shapton glass last. I really like you can get the chosera in a thick stone now from chefknivestogo. Use to be only 3 mm now they are 6mm thick.

Yeahhh I'll probabaly to with the Chosera stones only because I've seen multiple videos on them. Just and added bonus that I can get them in 6mm now rather than 3mm

The glass wear slower and cut faster. They will also cut more high resistant steels then both chosera and the pros.. the glass hr that is the white ones.. the glass hc is a Light grey and cuts traditional steel better( or so they say) high resistant vs high carbon

Used both extensively. I prefer the Shaptons MUCH more than the Chosera. Better results, and they last much longer.

The Shapton glass and some Shapton Pros will cut high alloy steels better than Chosera.

I've got the 320 and 6k shaptons glass. I use the 6k for finishing mostly. It's not as fine as the EP 6k tapes. Maybe about the same as the 3K tapes. Michael Christy on Youtube says he feels spyderco's ultrafine and the suehiro 20k give a nicer finish than shapton glass.

Gritomatic sells the suehiro 20k and a bunch of other diamond stones. If you don't already have diamonds, get them for when you face high carbide steels.

That is very nice for Michael Christy! I'm very happy for him and respect his & anyone's decision on their choices, including yours. I don't believe anyone would argue against a 20K Suehiro leaving a finer finish than the 6K Shapton stone mentioned. Shapton does have a 15K and 30K stone though! We could try those? Although quite pointless for a blade, ase how FINE, or "Polished" an edge is has little to do with how sharp it actually is. I've had many, many years and thousands of sharpenings on the Edge Pro. I have used the tapes, and TO ME, they are absolute JUNK! Along with the EP stones! I have used the Shapton Glass to finish some of the hardest knive steels. I doubt the tapes would do much of anything on several of these steels. But, to each his own choice....mislead as it may be.

Hmm I just can't see going that high with my grits as I mainly use my knives for much harder task than just opening envelopes/boxes (cutting tape). I'm worried I probabaly won't even need the 3k to be honest. Either way..sounds like I just need to settle for the Shaptons.

You won't be "settling" for the Shaptons, LOL! I agree with not needing the super high grit media sharpening stones. I have up to the 8k Shapton, but I rarely use it! 6K is typically my ending point for my sharpest knives. Honestly, Shapton makes a 4K stone that I LOVE! I go from 1K to 4K and the edge is always amazing! I would still be absolutely happy with the 4K.

Does price come into play for anyone here?
You can get a full set of 8 Choseras from Chefs Knives To Go for $255.
You can get maybe 4 or 5 Shapton Glass stones (depending on the grit) for this price.
Would most of you still take fewer Shapton's over the Choseras?

Thanks!

Ummmmmm, WRONG! You can get about the same amount of Shaptons for that much. Anyway, I don't understand needing 8 stones to sharpen a knife. I don't use that many to establish a secondary bevel and sharpen. I picked up 4, but hardly ever use the 8K for $170. Look harder before posting incorrect information my friend.

Wow, friendly forum here eh?
My question "Does price come into play for anyone here?" wasn't meant to come off in a snarky way (if it rubbed you the wrong way)...it was a genuine question.

If I was wrong on the Shapton prices, I apologize.
Would you mind sharing what Shapton grits you got for your set of 4? Ive seen bundles that come with a 500, 2K, 6K and 16K. Do you think these is a decent set/missing anything?

It is friendly. Please don't take it personal. At least not from me! When I correct, I'm correcting the COMMENT, not the FORUM MEMBER.. if that makes any sense. You didn't rub me the wrong way. I don't know you. And I wasn't trying to attack you. Just the comment.

I have the 1K, 4K, 6K & 8K, but as I said, I hardly even use the 8K. And I use diamond for anything below 1K, as it is just stock removal at that point. 16K is WAY overkill for sharpening knives IMHO. I always prefer using a 1K. I typically see no need for a 2K. Other's mileage may vary.

I apologize if I offended you. Like I said, it's not the person, it's the comment. Sounds weird. Hope it makes some sense to you. I will also say, I certainly don't know everything. I'm usually careful, but I've been wrong before. I admit when I am. And I appreciate when someone points it out. This is how we learn. You admitted you were wrong, and you have my respect.

So wait ...off topic but I want to buy the Shapton GLASS for Edge Pro, correct? Not just the regular ol' Shapton Edge stones ?!
