Chris Reeve cracked my blade. Your opinion please

I agree that CQ should have caught it, and yes it is unfortunate that BG42 may be more vaulable than S30v, but this is knife making.. metal can crack when pressure is applied. LOL u don't need to be informed of the risks to know that. Offering a new blade is a VERY appropriate solution to the problem, he doesnt even have to, but that proves how much he cares about his customers. THAT SAID, why not just get some BG42 blanks and make a new blade.. that is what knifemakers do, no? Forge and grind metals?

I think you left one thing out. I think they knew there was a crack and sent it back hoping the owner would not notice right away.
In my experience, people that spend upwards of $400 on a folder are not likely to miss the faintest issue with a knife. Their eyes (organic micrometers/calipers) are keenly trained to notice an off center blade, even if it is 1/100th of a mm, the slightest uneven bevels, and can smell a bad heat treat from a few states over. Insinuating that it was done on purpose is not likely, that is just not the way that business is run. At least, that is not the impression I've gotten. Anytime there is a part that requires "press fitting", there is a risk of damage; think about it. I do think there should be a disclaimer. But then again, if they do break something and offer to make it right (mechanically), does the disclaimer need to be said from a practical perspective?

I think it's odd that it came back cracked w/o prior notice. To me, that deserved a phone call or e-mail. Sending you back a damaged knife was weird and I'm sure that they are looking into this incident and somebody has gotten thier ass chewed.
Get reimbursed the shipping, get a new blade of your choiceand see if they'll throw in a t-shirt or hat.
They'll do you right.

First off, if you had a very collectible BG-42 Large Regular, you shouldnt have messed with it. Any collector will tell you that a rare knife is more desirable in its original condition. You could have established that by a simple post here and saved yourself a lot of grief and got plenty out of the knife without the mods. Rule # 1: Do your homework. With the internet, its as easy as falling off a log.

However, I do think that CRK screwed up by a) not advising you of the risks and b) sending the knife back damaged.

That said, I wouldnt expect them to replace the blade with a BG-42 blade. I somehow doubt they have BG-42 blades lying around. Take the S30V blade and lesson learned!

Have them replace it with a BG42 blade if they can, imho that and A2 are about the best blade steels going especially for a folder of the CRK ilk. If not go with what they are offering but tell'em you want a large and a small which I think is fair considering what I have seen old Sebbie's go for with BG42 and ATS34 blades. keepem sharp

CRK makes knives, right? A tools. During their maintenance process they damaged this tool, so they offered a replacement with undamaged piece.
From manufacturer point of view a knife is not a custom vintage extra valuable piece. I dont see anything wrong with their action.

Just bad luck..

Thanks for all the responses that each one gave.
