Well, I guess Bill Harsey, Chris Reeve and the guys from Crucible are retards and anyone with an apple, a 3lb hammer and a hockey mask is the real authority. Of course there were so many test controls the info is infallible.

Don't hate the player..hate the game!

Thanks for the test Noss...as useful as always. I still like the Warrior but won't be getting a GB anytime soon.

Your welcome everyone for the test. :)

Dinkum: No one every said they were retards you did. I didn't wear the hockey mask during this test so you can't use this argument. :D

The door swings both ways. Some blades can take what I dish out and some can not. I chose knives that have a reputation for toughness and strength
and put them to the test. Some shine some don't. The door swings both ways.

Wow. Didn't see the flames coming on this one . Here's my take.

Noss's tests are beyond abuse. No one should put their knives through what he he does. That said, the Green Beret is touted as "Efficient - Tough - Exceptional" and "uncompromising". It is also issued to people who, at times, will most likely use it to pry with or punch holes in sheet metal. Considering several cheap knives excelled at this, while the GB failed, is a point worth discussing.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

For everyone who says it could be a bad heat treat: you may be right, but if you are paying $300 for a knife, shouldn't this be something you don't want to worry about?

I'm looking forward to this one, but dude, remember that Justin doesn't exactly sharpen the RD series before he sends them out, on purpose. This will substantially affect some of your tests, methinks. I just got one a week or two ago, and it's taking a fair bit of work to get it usably sharp. That said, my RD7 is definitely, um, robust, you might say. Keep a tube of icy-hot, handy. :)

You can always ask Justin to sharpen it up for you. I did so with my RD4 custom, and it came here so sharp out of the box that I almost cut my head off just looking at it! :p

Retards? No. Businessmen? You bet. Human, and thus not invulnerable to the occasional error? Nothing seems to imply otherwise.

It's of course statistically impossible to make even remotely valid generalizations based on just one knife. That doesn't change the fact, though, that the Green Beret is a pretty odd mix of properties. It has a long, thick blade that doesn't exactly help cutting performance. It's made of steel that is not the most impact resistant one around, and has been left to relatively low RCs quite likely in an attempt to increase toughness - with a side effect of reducing edge retention. So, to me, it looks like this knife isn't optimized for cutting performance, and it isn't optimized for "hard use" or as some prefer abusive use performance and toughness. Then what's the point? If it's supposed to be a mix of the two, it doesn't seem to do even that nearly as well as many less pricy knives. So, I don't quite "get" this knife, but maybe it's just me. It looks pretty nice, if one likes the tactical type of knife, though.

In an ideal world? Sure. But in reality, I don't see how it's practically possible for a knifemaker to ensure that not a single one of their knives ever gets out of the shop faulty in some way.

Noss great test

It's to bad that it failed so miserably however, look at it this way it has potential for nice light duty camp knife.

I don't think there's any real "authority" here, just _information_ to be used as you see fit

Yeah. But what percentage of the blades are poorly heat treated if a random sample was tested (meaning this one) and it had a poor HT

One thing I have come to find over the years is that the steel is important to blade performance but probably more important is the heat treatment of that steel. If they mess up the heat treatment of the finest steel it will not perform as well a a properly heat treated knife made from very cheap steel.

I am not saying that is what is going on with this knife, just that S30V is a good steel and is a lot more likely to be consistent than the heat treatment.

Great test Noss4.I'm looking forward to your future tests. They are entertaining as well as informative.Keep em sharp.

I really don’t know what to say. This is supposed to be a knife that can take punishment. Not to the extent of this test but enough to aid in the survival of the user. Hopefully the user will not be in need to baton at this level. But I’m not crossing my fingers on that. Maybe the GB is just more of an art piece then anything. I wouldn’t mind a test done on the other fixed blades in A2 or even a folder shootout.

CRK won't comment I'm 99.99 percent sure.

Anyway I'll paypal some buck towards an CRK A2 knife test.

I can't wait for that ranger test, Justin will probably give you a new one if you break it too.

Noss4, any chance of testing another Green Beret just by chance this one was a lemon?,,,VWB.
