I ordered the Mountaineer 1 a few months ago and after seeing the pics of the Nyala, I couldn't decide which to buy. So, this morning I ordered the Nyala in addition to my already placed order for the Mountaineer. When I get them, I'll post my feeling for each. I'm certain I will not have a problem selling either one of them if I choose to keep only one.

How comfortable is the handle? I can't get over the fact that the slabs are not flush with the tang of the knife. It looks quite uncomfortable. I'm trying to keep an open mind though, so I'd appreciate it if you guys could share your thoughts. Thanks.

Congrats! :thumbup::thumbup:

Darn, what a looker this knife is... Really digging the design and materials. This might end up being my second CRK fixed blade; if indeed I can find the money for it. I like the Professional Soldier model too, but this beauty exceeds it in almost every aspect (IMPO)

You are asking a good question but in my experience, it's not an issue. It might even be a slight advantage for a secure grip. BTW, when Halpern Titanium first introduced their pre-made scales for the Spyderco Mules, they had a slightly greater offset between the scales and the tang. I thought it would be a bust, but in practice it's at least a non-issue and maybe a plus.

I agree with most about this piece. I bought one at Blade and have been totally satisfied with it....except, for the sheath. I, too, would have preferred a drop loop to get the whole rig down even with the top of my belt. The sheath is solidly built, to be sure, I would just have liked a lower riding sheath.
I also had Chris and Ann sign the back of the sheath as a souvenir of my first Blade. Great, great, people. Very approachable and friendly. Definitely one of my favorite companies.

Nice touch! There are some really great people in this industry. The Glessers leap to mind immediately as well. Enjoy the Nyala!

I agree with all of the positive comments. I just received my Nyala today, and am thilled beyond expectations. I own both the large, small Sebenza's, &" and 5.5" GB, and the Mnandi, and the Nyala is the perfect descrete fixed blade. The quality of all CRK can be depended upon, always. My new arrival will be evaluated against my Benchmade 140, Randall 10-5 salt water fisherman, and the Kanetsune Seki KB203. I think if I had a Kydex sheat option, I would elect the CRK Nyala. Can you tell us where we can aquire one of those sheaths?

One saved round. The leather sheath that the Nyala knife comes with is absolutely the best leather sheath on the market. Go visit their website: www.gfeller.us It clearly is the most appropriate sheath to match the quality, and application of the knife, which means it's just not molly friendly. I fully understand that the military market was not the intent of the Nyala, as the Professional Soldier meets that niche, but a Kydex option would allow a cross utility function.

I am speculating, but I own several Linen Micarta handle knives, and the material seems to expand over time as the linen absorbs moisture. I think CRK engineered this into the slabs so it will eventually flush with the knife ove time.

I have 2 of them a user and an autographed one, now I just wish they kept with the button belt loop sheath because the supplied sheath does not fit my London bridge riggers belt. Indeed its a great sheath and looks great with a dress belt and gos to dinner quite well but when I am camping I don't want to take off my belt just to take the knife off for the night when I am sleeping.

I really appericated reading this post. I honestly have never given much thought to buying a Nyala BEFORE now. This knife seems to fit the bill as a good hiking knife for me. Hmmmm I might just have to give Chris a call...

Awesome Pictures and thanks for the side by side pics of the Nyala & Sebenza. That really helps!

I really like mine - the S35V steel holds an incredible edge.

I was worried that repeatedly taking the knife in and out of the leather sheath would dull the edge - not a chance.

It feels great in the hand, and I have it with me after work and on the weekends.

Be careful with the extra long lanyard - it likes to get caught on things like drawer knobs in the kitchen. I desparately need to shorten mine.

Awesome photos! I've had my Nyala for about 3 months now. I love the size but will nit-pick two things. First the handle scales not being flush with the tang. This looks cool but I find the handle a tad small and feel if the scales were a little wider or flush with the tang the knife would have a better grip. I'm really splitting hairs here because it really looks nice the way it is.

The second thing is the sheath. It's really well made, it just doesn't work for me. The knife is very hard to get in and out. When putting the blade back in it's so hard that I feel that the knife may cut right thru the sheath. Maybe once the leather softens up it will be easier but right now there is no way I can get the knife back in the sheath while it's on my belt. It's basically a two handed operation.

PS, can I ask who makes the small push dagger in your photo? Thanks, jc

The intent of the tang being proud of the scales was to improve the grip :) but that doesn't necessarily work for everyone.

I thought it might be a good time to revive this old thread, considering I just purchased one yesterday.

The Nyala is a great little knife. I have the coated drop point version, and I'll be getting the stonewashed version soon.

I have only good things to say about this knife. I'd like to point out the ergonomics on this knife as especially outstanding. The grooved scales and jimping provide an amazing grip of the knife. If you like leather sheaths, the sheath that comes with the knife is great. I do love the leather sheath that comes with the knife, but I'm considering getting a Kydex sheath so I can have a wider variety of carry options.

It has served me very well.
