Chris Reeve Modifications: How do you guys feel about them...? Knives like the "Scout" come to mind. Sebenzas with various holes and millings into the Ti Slabs come to mind also. Nearly all of them look great. Do you feel its worth doing a Mod knowing full well CRK will no longer warranty it, even if its something the Mod did not affect at all...? Engraving by someone else other than CRK will probably void the warranty as well.

I have had several ideas on some Mods. Not so much to a One Piece Knife other than the "Scout" of course, but mostly to the sebenza. My main reason for not doing anything is because of the warranty. For example. If you add a swedge and years down the road you have a lock-up issue or even need the bronze washers replaced, this swedge You did will void the warranty.......With ALL the CRK's I have and have had ( I counted a total of 65 ), I have only ever had 3 times where I needed to send a Knife to CRK. Thats pretty good odds in my book and one of em was I bought a used sebenza and the previous owner did not assemble it properly and damaged the bronze washers. Something that can happen to any newbie. I will not get into the others, but things do happen.

Just your thoughts......?

Some mods are tempting. The most i'll ever do is rub it down with a little sand paper or whatnot, to give it a distressed or worn look.

I own a couple of warranty voiders, but I still love 'em.
I would prefer to only own genuine all stock Chris Reeve knives, but sometimes a design or modded element catches my eye and I buy it with full knowledge of its voided warranty.

I can kind of see CRK point here, in that a line has to be drawn somewhere, and the easiest and most understandable approach is that any modification other than a CRK modification voids the warranty.

That said, and recognized, I see nothing wrong with a modification of the owners choice. After all, our knives are personal to us and to make them all the more special personally is a good thing.
Lisa's beautifully engraved knife is a case in point. Perhaps the embellishment voids the warranty but there's no denying that knife is very special.

I believe there is merit to both sides of the coin here. Just my view.........

What? This old thing? :D Seriously though, it's the BEST warranty voided knife I've ever had, much credit to Chris Reeve, and certainly to the engraver (Tim George) as well!

Yes, and we call agree with you =)

But if you are doing to do something like that, or have something engraved to personalize for either yourself or someone else, then do it. If it's something cheesy, then I don't know. Selling it later on if you either had to or wanted to, usually comes out that an unmolested knives is usually worth more.

Good point. It always pays to think ahead and circumstances can change.
Happened to me more than once.
When I recently "discovered" my CRK Sebenzas many of my "keepers" were no longer kept!

Right on Lisa!! Who needs an ol' "warranty" anyway....?? :D

I have been moding, making and fixing knives for a long time now. I have found that people don't really wan't stuff done to CRKs other than a new scale or different back spacer. I think that in its self is telling and in the best way. If I mod a knife that is mine I will tend to have a second knife and mod the other one. The only warranty destroying mod so far has been the Scout that I did. I don't know if a CF scale or what not is really a void, but I also don't now what CRK might have to say about havng it on the knife for prolonged periods.

I think if you can afford to do it then by all means go ahead and do it, they are your knives and it was your own money. If one saved up to get that cherished Sebenza or perhaps if it was a gift then I would be less quick to have work done and probably wouldn't at all. Most of the stuff I have seen done looked great, but there have been a couple of shockers pop up so one does need to be carefull and think long and hard about what they might want done.

I dig mods if there done right or done professionally. And as long as the owner is willing to take the risk of voiding the warranty than I say go for it.
I'm getting ready to send out my brand new SNG to Mr. Krein to get a re grind. I don't plan on beating the crap out of it so I don't mind voiding the warranty.

I totally agree:thumbup:

The only modifications that have interested me are the scout and Mayonized Sebenza. I think both of them I could chance living with a voided warranty. On the scout I can't see any warranty issue coming up anyway.

Some people modify knives tastefully, others dont.

I can understand from a maker point of view that it voids the warranty.

? when a knife is modified and voids the warranty, will CRK still work on it and charge for repairs, or not touch it at all.

I knowingly and happily voided a warrenty on one of my small Sebs so I cound open it with either hand, filing down the back slab away from the thumbstud a little. Here's a thread I ran on it.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...extrious-Opening-(Not-For-The-Faint-Of-Heart)

I've since done even more to it, but haven't gotten pics uploaded yet.

The thumb lug on the lock side is real close to the lock bar and pretty useless to me. So I can see the point of that mod! I didn't mod my CRK since it is kind of a rarer piece, but I did teach myself to open it left handed, you can fit your index finger snug under the thumb lug and finger (not wrist) flick it out. So yea, CRK single lug can be ambidextrous.

From what I have read, I believe they will not touch it at all..............I personally would have no problem Paying for a service. For instance, If I milled grooves into the non-locking handle scale. This voids the warranty. Should I have a lock-up issue down the road, I would have no problem Paying CRK to fix it. 99.9% of the time, if you have a issue with a folder, its the lock-up. This is mainly what I was referring to when I started the thread......The "Scout", I would not be worried about as your just basically taking the hump off the spine.

That certainly makes a difference. I can't remember off hand but I know they wanted to fit some of the minor parts( when I got my 1st I asked for a parts repair kit) and they would not send out those parts. I would not worry about blade replacements or lock side replacement-I could go almost forever without needing those, but bushings, washers and stop pins will wear out over time.I guess I should stick with non-modified

I'm not trying to change topics, but WHAT is this scout model everyone keeps talking about? I can't seem to find any information on it.
