Chris Reeve Modifications

I'm not trying to change topics, but WHAT is this scout model everyone keeps talking about? I can't seem to find any information on it.

The "Scout" is a modded CRK One Piece Ubejane Skinner. Its basically the skinner with the hump on the spine ground off. MANY asked CRK to do a run of them and they refused, so those that had a ubejane took it upon themselves.

Check out this recent thread started by HAZE when talking about the mountaineers. There are several pics of it throughout this thread.

The thumb lug on the lock side is real close to the lock bar and pretty useless to me. So I can see the point of that mod! I didn't mod my CRK since it is kind of a rarer piece, but I did teach myself to open it left handed, you can fit your index finger snug under the thumb lug and finger (not wrist) flick it out. So yea, CRK single lug can be ambidextrous.

After I did that mod I swapped blades with another from the same year and put the scale from my Freedom Sebbie on it, so now it's the only Small I carry. I tried to open them like you do, but my weak, old hands couldn't do it. So out came the file. I wouldn't do it to a rare one though. If I ever decided to sell it I'd put the filed scale back on the common one it came on in the first place.

When I'm asked if I can groove a set of Sebenza handles, I make sure the person knows it will void their warranty. Most do not care. I can think of maybe one or two out of maybe 30-40 people that have backed out. Furthermore, I've worked on at least 400 Sebenzas over the years. I can't think of one that I thought was in any condition that warranted a trip back to the headquarter for repair work. My personal avatar knife is 10 years old and still going strong. I use my Seb daily in my carpenter job. Now that is a testament to a knife that can handle real work.

Mr. H

You are the CRK modification king IMO.

Holy cow, I bet you can assemble and disassemble a Sebenza with your eyes closed! :D

I might have been known to modify one or two in my time :)

Due to current German laws you are not supposed to carry a knife that can be opened one-handed to a locked position - not without a "legal reason" and regardless what size :(
So I decided to eliminate the corresponding feature and push out the thumb stud on my small Regular
To make sure the remaining hole wouldn't get mixed up with other maker's holes in blades :D I filled it with a mixture of Green Glow in the Dark Powder and epoxy. Now it looks good in the dark, too :)

In fact the first owner had already anodized it to a golden color so it had lost it's warranty anyway...

I prefer my Sebenza's in "stock" condition. I have seen some nice mods. I have seen some not-so-nice mods. I must say that the resourceful idea from Sextant is really making lemonade from lemons--nice!

Sextant's mod is very clever, in that it enables him to conform to imposed knife regulations (regardless of how stupid they are) and adds functionality. Brilliant.

Has anyone tried the boiling Oxy-Clean mod that supposedly darkens the handles to a kind of carbon-black color?? I've read some snippets here and there about it. Haven't seen any pictures of the before an after though except on a watch. I'm tempted to try it but wish I could find better info.

Never mind! I did it with the help of the original oxi-clean oxidizing poster and it turned out great!!!! I darkened my light colored sandblasted handles to original dark gray. I'm going to get another Sebenza and see of I can get it to near black.

Ok, now I'm curious! Pics or it didn't happen:cool:

Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the handles right after the sand blasting but they were pretty much the same color as the scotch-brited stonewashed knife. This is the knife that was scotch-brited, stonewashed, then bronze, then denim blue, then dark blue, then stonewashed with blue clip and now back to this!

I quite like that, it takes a nice glossy looking black when done over the tumbled finish.

It's funny. I had and I followed the urge to modify my knife and in the process I learned to stonewash in the dryer, anodize, and oxidize and it's brought me full circle. I think I like the original CRK bead blast the best!!! Although I still have an itch to take an original Sebenza and see how dark it can get!!!!! Black?
