Chris reeve s35vn

I've found that with CRK S35VN, keep it around 40 inclusive seem to be a sweet spot for me. I've had good edge retention with it, but not great edge retention. I've taken it down lower and have mediocre edge retention.

M4 and M390 will beat S35VN. It's part of the reason why I still have my Gayle Bradley in M4 and my BM710 in M390 and ZT0777 in M390. Back when I only had a S35VN Small Sebenza and a CTS-204P(M390 equivalent) Spyderco Southard, I could always get the Southard sharper on my Arkansas stone with minimum effort. I still own the Southard, and the Sebenza is long gone. I think part of my problem was that I was taking my Sebenza lower than 40 when I was freehanding.

Marthinus,
I am in Colorado Springs, unfortunately. There's a military base that has me tied to it for the next couple of months...

Buffalohump,
I like the idea of these knives. I guess I'm having issues coming to grips that I have a nice mid tech knife and I just can't dig the steel. If I were to sell it and the extra blade I have, hoping around $500, then I could definitely get those two knives you're talking about. Though I may switch the endura for a Delica or dragonfly...

And I think some people buy a CRK not necessarily for the steel, but for the sum of its parts and are willing to give up a little on edge retention in exchange for the sum of a superb quality tool. If I just wanted a badass cutter with awesome edge retention at thin angles, I'd carry nothing but my Gayle Bradley. But I like my CRKs too. I shouldn't even be commenting on CRK edge retention because I haven't used mine enough to form my own opinion. My small 21 just happened to come with an edge that was convexed and too obtuse for me to enjoy cutting with it, but hopefully I'll finish up tonight with my edge and start the test drive.

Different people find different qualities more important when knife shopping. To some, steel choice is the deal breaker. It's definitely not a $400 knife, but in pure cutting and edge retention, a ZDP Delica is hard to beat, and that's worth it to some if you can't own them all.

And mine was obtuse enough that a Sharpmaker wouldn't have touched it. especially from the belly to the tip, so I assume you used a Sharpie and determined that everything was kosher from that aspect?
