Chris Reeve small Sebenza 21.....just not diggin it

I agree that, at first, the thumb stud was quite a learning curve and almost disinterested me from the Sebenza entirely. But after gaining appreciation for the overall design and most of all the fit and finish I fell in love. I soon learned that this is not a knife to use as a weapon nor a knife to be flicking open. I cringe at the site and sound of steel snapping against titanium. lol

Oh and get a large. :D

Zippo, are those a small and large Regular at the bottom?

I love my Sebenza. Never carry my Alias. To each his own. Not looking to use my knife for self defense though and the Alias flips open like an auto. Bothered me at first that the handle was getting marked. But over a year and a half of everyday use is turning the handle into a really cool pattern and it is very smooth. Felt grippy and weird at first. It definitley grows on you. Now it is far and away my favorite and the only thing I carry. I like the small, but I spend a lot of time around sheeple.

Sebenzas are not for everybody who enjoys knives. But those who get it, really get it.

Don't use the Sebenza as a self-defense tool. Simple:D.

No, not really simple. If that knife happened to be the only knife he carried in the event of an altercation in which case he felt it needed to preserve his own life, than it *becomes* his self defense tool.

Further more, I think people that carry more than one knife most days are in the minority.

Meh, theres nothing wrong with carrying an SD knife and a slip joint or high end folder, i wouldnt feel under knifed in the least with a large sebenza, btw fred perrin who i think knows a thing or two about self defense really likes HIS sebenza and wrote a very favorable review on his now defunct website. maybe the op would be better served with another knife but i dont think that is in any way a shortcoming on the sebenzas part merely a user preference.

I dont see how a sebenza is significantly slower to open than most other production folders.

Thanks for the replies.

I've carried the knife on one occasion while wearing suit pants. It was my only weapon at the time and thus its ability to be potentially utilized in a self defense situation was important. I've since moved to another for suit pant carry. The inability for me to deploy the blade in a smooth consistent manner is something I will not live with....well built knife or not.

I've decided to get rid of the knife.

two thoughts. Buy an automatic knife if you want one that opens quickly, and second, get a gun for defense. :D

its not even a matter of opening quickly. the sebenza is just super uncomfortable to open....period. to each his own, but i got rid of mine for the same reasons.

In the words of Chris Reeve:

"Our knives are not designed as rapid deploy weapons or as worry beads but as cutting instruments."

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/730951-Some-words-from-Chris......

I think the "worry bead" phrase is directed at those who sit in front of the TV and open their knives 100s of times in a row. I guess if that's how you use your knife, a Sebenza might leave your thumb sore. It's not a problem if you open it primarily to use it as a cutting tool.

Rocketman, that avatar pic is great. I might actually give that guy money, ... only if he used it on booze.

I like LARGE folders, that being said I was told I would LOVE a Sebenza = large.

So after using that and finding the Benchmade barrage was more fun and LOTs easier to use, traded the Sebby for an Umnumzaam and now an selling that to a friend who is dying for one.

I also do not understand the love of the Striders.

Guess that is why we are all wired differently.

Not near as expensive or well made, but I would rather EDC a C/S [ and often do ] than those high end blades that just dont "cut it" for me.

But the Benchmade's are my favorites and when I want a large S/D or pocket blade - its the large skirmish.

And yes I am one that carries a C/S Rajah II or Voyager 2X [ in pocket now ].

Maybe try a Spyderco Military or Para-Military IWB carry...

That sort of terminology is what makes non knife people freak out in a hurry when they anything less than a Victorinox. Knives are cutting tools, and it's a safe bet that most people here also consider them tools as well. The minute you start "weaponizing" things, it becomes a disservice to everyone in the knife community. You can call a knife whatever you want, just something to think about.

Unless you have ample and reliable training, the moment you decide to use a knife for SD will change your life forever. You would be treading into felony territory (aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, etc.) in terms of a harsh introduction to the U.S. justice system. You just cannot go around whipping out a knife everytime life throws you a curve ball. If you got into a scuffle against a couple people, it would be best to run away or seek help before resorting to pulling a "weapon". It's happened before where an untrained person has their "SD" tool of choice removed from them and used against them.

That is too much common sense in one short sentence. :D
