Christmas Knives

I still dont understand why the toys are wired to the cardboard. Like if nothing else could be put there to hold them.

I cannot answer that question. However. Please don't mistake the gray rubber twist ties for plastic. They are filled with a metal wire.

They get me every year! Just spend the five minutes and untwist the damn things ;)

Strike that. Keep a knife, multi tool and dykes handy.

My traditional Christmas helper. Cuts the wrapping, boxes, plastic, and helps with battery door screws.

Quiet home today. The kids are with their other parents this morning, so it’s just the lady and I right now. 8:13am in Portland. She’s stirring lightly. We’ve had incoming Marco Polo app messages (video messages— free app, get it!) from excited kids and nieces.

No knife stuff.

Yet.

My lady is getting a 3 piece Shun Prestige kitchen knife set. She asked for “good kitchen knives” this year, and never actually asks for anything, so I’m a 41 year old man trying to not jump on the bed and rush her out to open her stuff. I’m so damn excited!!!

Went to my lady's daughter's for supper last evening and they opened some gifts. I lent her son in law my wenger patriot to open his gift, he nor anyone else had a knife on them. Seems shameful to me. I think I'll gift him one of my small single or dual blade knives and hope he will keep it in his pocket for future use. Maybe, maybe not. We'll see.

About 13 years ago my wife bought me a Spyderco Spyderfly. I loved it. I stuck it in my back pocket using the pocket clip and off we drove to Louisville to see her folks. When we got there and I went to fish it out of my pocket. The latch had popped open allowing the handles to spread about 1/4" and I proceeded to stab my finger nearly to the bone.

Thankfully, the knife was Newgrahms, so the "You're going to need them" band aids they throw in with their orders had made it with us.

This Christmas she and my daughter picked out a Schrade Balisong. Learning my lesson, I took 10 minutes this morning and cobbled together a sheath out of scrap leather so that I can carry the knife without stabbing myself. It's also from Newgrams, so the provided bandages will be coming along just in case;)

Last year. Sharpened our #1 kitchen knife on the Sharpmaker. Started getting the turkey (Christmas turkey) ready for the oven. Cut the butt- trim some extra skin. Anyway my wife come over to inspect my work. She says, “Damn that’s a bloody turkey!”
I sliced the tip of my thumb off and I didn’t even know it. I surprise her with the super glue. My thumb isn’t flat because I glued the hunk that was hanging back in place!

I did this with a folder, and the pad of my pinky. Talking to a good friend, looking at knives for my wife (smaller than my mitts were used to). I closed a little knife and handed it back to my buddy behind the counter. After a second or two, I noticed a weird fleshy coin size piece on the counter.

That sucker bled forever..... my friend laughed for quite a while.

I used a pink Cold Steel Tuff Lite Mini for present opening duty (only a few plastic straps ended up needing murdering this year, luckily).

When I opened my presents I found my lovely bride had purchased me a William Henry Gentac Saturn B30. It's two ounce of pretty little gentleman's knife. Titanium handles, ~3" zdp-189 blade blade clad in 420j2 stainless. I quite like it, here's a first quick snapshot:

my mother in law let out an “UGH...Jesus...that’s a scary knife”.

Still shaking my head a bit about this, on Christmas morning.....at least she could have said "baby Jesus that's a scary knife..." o_O

One Christmas my elderly grandmother came and was staying at my parent's house for the holidays. She was opening something and asked for some scissors, I handed her probably a small Queen peanut. She looked at the knife then me then asked in a disapproving tone if I always carried a knife. I said sure do doesn't everyone...as my dad and BIL pulled out their knives to show her. Priceless.
